Last week was my scramble to get taxes done week. And we finally made our appointment with an estate attorney to get our trust reviewed. It is 20 years old and it needed a quick review and updating. It was a chance to add Second Chance’s H.A.L.O. program into our trust so our Cockers have a safety net in case our family can’t step up and take care of my beloved babies. We have been meaning to do this, talking about it and generally procrastinating for several years. Now it is done and it feels great. The other thing we were able to do was to add SCCR as a beneficiary. We had spoken to several other super Cocker supporters who had also included SCCR in their trusts and felt this was the best way to help ensure our work continues.I attended a pet estate planning seminar several years ago and that attorney said one thing that really stuck with me. If you own a house, have kids or pets you need a trust. I agree. Our furkids deserve better than a scramble by family members after you pass, playing “who gets stuck with the dog” and then guess who ends up at the shelter because no one was really prepared to step up. Think about this now, be prepared and use H.A.L.O. as your safety net if no friends or family are available to take your baby the way they thought they would be. Life happens and your Cocker deserves to know he will be taken care of no matter what.

At the tender age of 4 months, Teddy Bear popped a cherry eye. As soon as the family found out how much it cost to fix, they decided to give him away. Second Chance Cocker Rescue could not have been more delighted! We will fix him up good as new, and find him a family that cares enough to take care of him properly.
Second Chance Cocker Rescue got a call from a family member about this sweet boy named Henry who was being abused by another family member. She pulled him out of the house and dropped him off with an SCCR rescuer/foster mom yesterday. We will have to evaluate him carefully to make sure his experience hasn’t created any aggression issues, but so far he is a sweetheart. This is where his foster mom found him when she returned home; on the kitchen counter. 
He really made himself at home!
We got a call from Megan, a woman who works with homeless people. She saw a tiny Cocker Spaniel living in a homeless shelter parking lot. She was bone thin, with two cherry eyes and her coat was so matted you couldn’t see much of her. Megan asked if SCCR would take her. We couldn’t say no to rescuing this sweet and scared soul. Megan was able to catch her and bring her down to be vetted and cared for in Romoland, CA. She is about four years old, red and white and has a very sweet disposition. She loves to kiss everyone she meets. She is a bit bossy with other dogs, but that is probably because she had to fight for every bite of her food for too long.
I met Harley 9 years ago when I was looking to rescue another Cocker. He was friendly, and got along with my other Cocker Spaniel immediately. As I left with Harley, I promised him a forever home. He seemed to be doing well, and then within a short time significant behavior issues began to surface. I immediately sought help from a variety of groups, and while only a few would help, their techniques were not effective. After a time, I made the heart wrenching decision that I was not equipped to handle Harley’s issues related to abuse during his formative puppyhood. I was fortunate in that during many calls seeking help, a rescue in another state suggested calling Elizabeth and Second Chance Cocker Rescue. 
I called and Elizabeth immediately came to my rescue, and eventually provided Harley with his forever SCCR sanctuary home. Harley died a little over a year ago having lived a full and happy life in his loving SCCR sanctuary home. I have supported SCCR for all these years because of their life-saving work and their dedication and love of Cocker Spaniels.

Hi, my name is Baxter. I was recently rescued by the fantastic folks at Second Chance Cocker Rescue. I’m 9 years old, and have been blind for a few years. I didn’t know what a Bed and Biscuit was but wow, it’s great! It’s almost like being at home. There are comfy couches to sit on, dog beds all over the floor, a huge play area with trees and soon there will be other oldsters like me to hang out with all day. Best of all, Carolyn comes out to give me lots of love. I will have 9 more roommates soon. I can’t wait! They said I am available for a Sanctuary home, but I can stay here forever if I don’t get one. No more shelter for me, ever!
