In 2025, Second Chance Cocker Rescue helped 62 dogs find their perfect families. Every wagging tail in this video represents a new beginning. World of Angels Foundation in China contacted us again about a dog they had saved. JoJo is a sweet “rural Chinese dog” (actually a poodle) that we agreed to help after several surgeons in China worked on two of his legs and ended up with a considerable amount of damage. Little JoJo came to us with a broken front leg that is actually detached in pieces (skin is holding it together) and basically just flops around when he hops. At one point someone tried to fix it, but it was not successful and there are pieces of bone floating around. Sadly, he also has a broken rear leg that surgeons in China tried to fix three times. Unsuccessful each time. He tries to use it, but it is not weight bearing. There is significant bone damage, but our amazing surgeon thinks she can fix it! His best chance for repair is with a bone graft. That poses it’s own dilemma, where to find matching donor bone? Well, since the front leg doesn’t work anyway, his best chance will be to amputate his front leg and use his own bone for a graft in the rear leg. We are feeling a little overwhelmed with the magnitude of this, but we committed and must do our best for him. This sweet little poodle boy really needs the whole SCCR family on this one. We are waiting for a formal estimate, but know we are looking at roughly $5,000. JoJo is going to be 5 years old in May of 2024 and weighs less than 15 pounds. A truly resilient and strong willed little guy to have made it this far. Anything you can help us with is deeply appreciated by all.

We got sweet Lainey from the shelter where she was slated for euthanasia basically due to lack of space and she is 9 years old. She is a full cocker, adorable little face and very nice. She is a little needy, so she will want a human(s) who is home a lot. Right now if her human goes outside, she runs to the fence and barks at her. This is not unusual for a shelter dog, and typically wears off in no time. Precious Lainey has typical cocker ears, some lenticular sclerosis in her eyes (the blue tint, but still can see) and a lot of little warties on her. She has been sick, so will be seeing a vet for medical assessment next week. She also needs a dental, so once we get her all fixed up, she will be ready to go. She is a lovely companion dog that just wants to be with you. If you are looking for a sweet cling-on who still has many years ahead of her, this is your girl. We remember how proud we were to have our non-profit status and were ready to go out and rescue some Cockers! We decided to start by introducing ourselves to the local rescues and shelters in the area. The three main shelters were all on the same street so we just started knocking on doors. Everyone was very positive and welcoming and we were feeling pretty good by the time we got to the last shelter on the street run by a local group, DAWG. As we knocked on the door, who should greet us but the founder Shirley Jensen one of the, if not the, pillars of rescue in the Santa Barbara area. Once she heard what we were doing, she threw up her hands, shouted wait right there and turned and ran off. She came right back with a black and white Cocker Spaniel asleep in her arms. She unceremoniously dumped her in my arms and said. “She is blind and deaf and 14 years old. You can take her can’t you?” Well, you can be sure we were not going to tell Shirley Jensen no, so Emily Grace came home with us.
Shirley and Emily Grace taught us more about rescue and what it takes to do it right than anyone else over the years. Shirley taught us that you never know what is coming around the corner and challenges are just a new chance to grow. Emily Grace taught us that dogs, even blind and deaf ones, can have an excellent quality of life and never take what you have for granted. Our motto, Saving lives, one dog at a time, was born that day. Emily Grace lived for almost two more years in a home with an older woman who thought the world of her. She was pampered, spoiled and loved rotten every day of the rest of her life. Emily Grace was the foundation for our Sanctuary program and in her spirit we have offered hundreds of dogs the last, best months or years of their lives.
We don’t count the last 20 years in the numbers of dogs we have rescued. Those are just statics. We remember each face, each story and how it touched us, one dog at a time.

One year old Sammy is going into surgery for his broken leg last week. When his family found out the cost they called us for help and relinquished him. The poor boy has a really bad break. We need good thoughts for him to be able to keep his leg. There are two breaks and a floating section. Since it happened over 48hrs before we go him his chance of a successful surgery of placing a plate on to hold all 3 pieces in place weren’t good but Dr. Jackson made it work. Now we put him on bed rest to make sure it heals well. There is still a chance we might have to amputate. Once his leg is healed then he goes back for cherry eye surgery and a neuter. Poor boy. That is a lot of bed rest for a youngster.

Look who got her freedom walk last week
Meet our newest baby girl, Paris! This sweet, beautiful angel was surrendered to the Baldwin shelter with a massive cherry eye, mammary tumors, a grade 4/6 heart murmur, is deaf, has the beginning signs of kennel cough, and teeth that need a good dental. She’s the sweetest girl, but has had her medical needs neglected for far too long. She deserves better!
Paris is currently with one of our volunteers who will be getting her seen by our vet ASAP. Once she has her surgery and is on the road to recovery, she will be available for adoption. Paris is 10 years old and loves people. We don’t know how she is with dogs or cats yet.

Help us change Winnie’s life and show her that most people are good!
Poor Winnie was rescued from the Riverside shelter late Friday. At only about 4 years old, this sweet angel has been through hell. She is super skinny, covered in wounds from being mauled by another dog, and foxtails are embedded all over her body. She has a deep scratch in her cornea.The first day she wouldn’t let anyone touch her she was so traumatized.
We got her medical care started immediately. Who knows what else she has going on under all of this. We know she has been through something terrible. Poor baby, she looked so defeated.
We put her on antibiotics and pain meds and by the time they kicked in she was sound asleep and slept like the dead for hours. She was so exhausted and she finally felt safe enough to relax. By today she had decided that moma Carolyn was her safe place and had settled into the house. She will see the vet for a more extensive exam on Monday and possible surgery to remove foxtails on Tuesday.
6/8/29 MONDAY PUPDATE: Dr card just called and said they even pulled foxtails out of Winnies mouth. One stuck in her tonsil and one wedged behind her molar. She took hundreds more out of her body and will probably have to do this again. Also she may lose her left eye. It appears something poked a hole in it and it is scarred and might be too damaged to save. The dog bites were vicious. She is on heavy antibiotics to prevent infection and we are keeping up the pain meds until she heals up more.
6/13/20 PUPDATE: Winnie will have to have her eye removed on Tues. It is in terrible condition and not getting any better with treatment. Dr Card wanted to wait because Winnie was so anemic it wasn’t safe. She will have more foxtails removed at that time. She is still oozing from all her sores and injuries. Her poor chest is a mess still. She is healing but slowly. She didn’t have any reserves in her body to fight off the infection and pain.
6/15/20 PUPDATE: Winnie had her eye removed today along with dozens more foxtails. We expect to have more foxtails to remove over the next month or two. The injury to her eye was caused by a foxtail. It pierced her eye, got infected and she was a mess. We found it like a spear in the back of her eye. Dr Card said it was huge. Please foxtails and dogs DO NOT mix.The one in her eye would have kept going and pierced her brain and killed her eventually. The good news is she has a chance to recover now. We are so thankful for your support. Without you she would not be healing up in her foster mom’s arms.
