Sweet Lainey

We got sweet Lainey from the shelter where she was slated for euthanasia basically due to lack of space and she is 9 years old. She is a full cocker, adorable little face and very nice. She is a little needy, so she will want a human(s) who is home a lot. Right now if her human goes outside, she runs to the fence and barks at her. This is not unusual for a shelter dog, and typically wears off in no time. Precious Lainey has typical cocker ears, some lenticular sclerosis in her eyes (the blue tint, but still can see) and a lot of little warties on her. She has been sick, so will be seeing a vet for medical assessment next week. She also needs a dental, so once we get her all fixed up, she will be ready to go. She is a lovely companion dog that just wants to be with you. If you are looking for a sweet cling-on who still has many years ahead of her, this is your girl. Sammy Got Hit By a Car

One year old Sammy is going into surgery for his broken leg last week. When his family found out the cost they called us for help and relinquished him. The poor boy has a really bad break. We need good thoughts for him to be able to keep his leg. There are two breaks and a floating section. Since it happened over 48hrs before we go him his chance of a successful surgery of placing a plate on to hold all 3 pieces in place weren’t good but Dr. Jackson made it work. Now we put him on bed rest to make sure it heals well. There is still a chance we might have to amputate. Once his leg is healed then he goes back for cherry eye surgery and a neuter. Poor boy. That is a lot of bed rest for a youngster.

What A Fatty Patootie!

Gertrude is a sweet gentle soul but holy cow she came in at 48 lbs…Now she is a tiny girl and should weigh only about 20-22 lbs. In addition she is missing an eye, mostly deaf, has bad skin and ears. She needs some medical care asap so off to the vet she goes. But she really needs to lose weight. She looks like an over stuffed ottoman. We are looking for help for her medical costs then for a forever home where they can keep her diet up and she can lose some weight. She will feel so much better soon.  Thank you for your Support! 2020 Will Be The Year Of The COCKER!

Greetings from Second Chance Cocker Rescue. This past year was a busy one for all of us at SCCR, and we have no intention of slowing down in 2020!

As you know, our primary mission has always been to rescue and find loving homes for Cockers throughout California. At times we have been called on to expand our reach to neighboring states. And, this past year we went worldwide by launching our Global Rescue Fund. The inaugural class flew from China to Los Angeles in October. This crew of five beautiful Cockers was saved from terrible conditions associated with the dog meat trade. It took a veritable squad of people to coordinate their rescue, but our amazing team of volunteers was up to the task. I am happy to report all five are now thriving. Another five are set to arrive soon, rescued from the same unthinkable fate, and we can’t wait to meet them.

In news closer to home, we purchased land for our Sanctuary made possible in no small measure by long-time donors The Maios. A place where our seniors who have yet to find their forever homes can reside in comfort, the Sanctuary will also include space to house adoptable Cockers we are unable to place in temporary foster care and Cockers in need of behavioral training for aggression and other socialization issues.

We are thrilled to see this dream becoming a reality. Our efforts last year focused on the permitting process and cleaning up the property. This year we will build the kennels, erect fencing, and construct a parking lot. A generous donation from Timothy and Connie Wagner, made in memory of their special boy, Arlo, has made this possible. We are pleased to announce the facility will be named “Arlo’s Second Chance Sanctuary.”

On behalf of all of us at Second Chance Cocker Rescue, I would like to thank you for furthering our mission. You have made a real difference in the lives of so many deserving Cockers (and a few Cocker-wannabes). Thanks to you, more than 150 dogs realized their best lives last year, and their adoptive families have been blessed with the unique brand of love rescue pups offer.

Donations to help us save more Cockers in 2020

Build It And They Will Come!

We are very excited to announce that Timothy and Connie Wagner have donated enough money to start building our Kennels…we have enough to put in a parking lot ( mandated by the county ), build the kennels and put in all the fencing! This incredibly generous donation is in memory of their very special Cocker Spaniel Arlo. In his memory we are naming our Sanctuary “Arlo’s Second Chance Sanctuary”. This donation will help us get up and running in months instead of years!

So we are starting out the year with 21 acres of land. As you see lots of trees, grass and shrubs but not much else. Soon we will have pictures of our new 10 spot parking  lot, working on building kennels and putting in fencing. We will keep you up to date and the pictures flowing. We expect to end the year with lots of stories and a full kennel up and running.

Ericka Caudillo will be our Sanctuary manager and she and her family are already moved into the trailer and are helping us get ready for the dogs. She is perfect for this position.

We still need your help, we need another washer/dryer set, an ATV or Golf cart, gravel for paths, heaters/coolers for the kennels,  shelving and storage boxes, we have tons of projects that still need your help with….

Deciding On A Theme

Picking out the look and feel of our Sanctuary was difficult. Once we decided on a Gold Mining Town theme, figuring out how to create it was even harder until we saw the Hurst Ranch Sheds for sale just down the road at the Hurst Ranch Feed Store.This is four sheds placed together to look like a street.They run 8 x 8 to 10 x 12 each. Big enough to house a few Cocker Spaniels very comfortably. For the dog kennels we are going to insulate and drywall each shed. They will have radiant heating in the floors for the winter, ceiling fans and swamp coolers for summer. We will upgrade to air conditioning if we need to. Each kennel will be furnished with a comfy sofa or overstuffed chair for napping. The dogs will be as snug as a bug in a rug.

Their runs will be a huge 80′ x 80′ and fill with trees, hammocks, chairs for us to relax on and a million smells, new each day. They will have their very own playgroups of their own best friends and plenty of room for us to hang out with them.

The first shed we need is to cover our well pump and filter. We decided to keep the feel all over the property we would use a Hurst Ranch Shed for this too. It will go next to our Hurst Ranch Barn Shed. This will cost approx $2000, perhaps less as we have been offered a discount on labor. Thank you, yes!!!

Soon She Will Be Bright As A New Penny

A friend showed up unexpectedly with a family in tow at 9:30 pm the other night! Janice was asked to look at their dog’s skin. They took her to a vet who wasn’t able to help. They stated that they adopted her about 2 months ago from Woods Humane Society where she was just fine. Currently, half of her fur is missing,  and she has bloody rips in her skin where she is aggressively scratching her wounded skin. She looks miserable! We took Penny into our rescue, and transported her to our vet the next day, who treated her for a bacterial infection caused by allergies. Now she is on antibiotics, medicated shampoo and allergy meds and in several weeks or months​ she will be as good as new. She is about 6-7 years old and needs a foster or an Adopter! Penny is very laid back and easy-going. She does well with the other foster dogs, and is great with the bunny. Penny is not a barker. We are working on house training, and she is learning to use the doggy door. Donations towards Penny’s medical bills are very much appreciated!

A Gentle Girl Named Babe

My name is Babe and I am searching for a new family. I thought I would be with my momma for the rest of my life, but my momma has Alzheimer’s, and is slowly forgetting to care for me. I like to think I have been a faithful and loving companion to my momma for all 11 years of my life, but the assisted facility thinks it is time to share my love with a new family. My human momma unfortunately has Alzheimers and it is the worst thing ever, to know that someone loves you so much, but just can’t seem to remember who I am or that I need care. My family has made this difficult decision to help me find a loving family that will care for me for the rest of my life. I am a gentle girl who would do best with an older family that can take me for walks a few times a day and help me shed a few pounds to get down to a healthier weight. I have never really been around cats or younger children, but I do ok with other dogs. I am spayed, up to date on my shots, and in general good health for my age.

Would you consider being my final forever family and promise to love me like my momma wants me to be loved? I am being fostered in the Bay Area of Northern California. Please get your applications in fast! I am a keeper!
