We Need Your Help

We are making progress slowly but surely at the Sanctuary. The water damage in the trailer is being fixed one room at a time. We have had one shed built to cover our well pump and filters and another one is being ordered to be used as a laundry room and storage shed outside the trailer. Beth has found someone to generously donate a used washer and dryer for us. They will be picked up as soon as the shed is in place.

We have run out of funds in the Building Fund after our first shed. We need $2600 total for the second shed and someone has committed $1500 matching funds so we just need $1100 to get it on order. Can you help? This shed is very important. We have started to get donations of stuff and have no where to put them.

We need someone to help weed wack before the Oct 12 weekend house warming. We want everyone to have enough room to park, picnic and walk around where the kennels will be built without rolling in stickers. Someone has donated a used gas weed wacker, can you donate a week end to help us tidy up?

Mary and Wayne have offer to donate 8 tons of pavers. They would make an amazing meditation garden. The pavers are in Santa Barbara and we need help getting them  to Jamestown…any one have a flat bed truck who is willing to help? We can help pay for gas. Even if you can only take part of them that would be tremendous help.

We also need help getting our 27 ft travel trailer from the Hemut area to Jamestown. It just needs a ball and hitch to pull it and again we are willing to help with gas. We need that up here by the Oct 12th weekend too if at all possible.

And if you can’t help move the pavers or travel trailer then maybe you can help donate towards the gas?

And last but no way least the first order of memorial pavers was delivered. We are looking for someone to help design a memorial wall and water feature for our memorial garden.

Sharing The Wealth

We have so much acreage, 21 total that we decided that we should share the wealth with the community and reached out to the Rose Wolf Wildlife Rescue. This rescue raises abandoned fawns and releases them in the wild. They had been looking for a piece of property for quite a while but were not having any luck until we invited them to come see our little slice of heaven. It was a perfect match!

They are working on clearing out the dead scrubs and opening the area up for their sheds and equipment. They have fencing, sheds, and everything they need to move in and get started. Best yet they have  herd of goats that they use to feed the fawns goats milk. Those same goats can help us keep our acreage clear and help with fire prevention.

So now when you come to visit you can visit with the Rose Wolf volunteers and help feed baby fawns too while you love on our pups.

For the months of June and July every $20 donation towards the the Building Fund you will get 10 tickets towards winning a weekend for two at the new Sanctuary including 2 night stay, dinner and breakfast for two at our favorite restaurants.

Just send in a donation marked “Building Fund” before July 31 and we will be announcing the winner at the Annual Picnic on Aug 10th in Santa Barbara.

Peeling Away The Walls

We have started the repairs to the trailer. First we focused on the back bedroom and started with the water damage in the ceiling…we found some critters had been making their home in the rafters. We put out traps and battled the wasp nest in the circuit box. That wild life sure likes to make it self at home.

We will be replacing dry wall, struts and insulation in the ceiling and walls where there is water damage. We can’t tell how extensive it is until we pull open the wall. We have started on the worst area hoping it will be better in other areas. We need Lowe’s gift cards and donations to purchase dry wall, 2x4s, insulation and paint. We found some one to volunteer for the labor…Thank you Ray!!

Deciding On A Theme

Picking out the look and feel of our Sanctuary was difficult. Once we decided on a Gold Mining Town theme, figuring out how to create it was even harder until we saw the Hurst Ranch Sheds for sale just down the road at the Hurst Ranch Feed Store.This is four sheds placed together to look like a street.They run 8 x 8 to 10 x 12 each. Big enough to house a few Cocker Spaniels very comfortably. For the dog kennels we are going to insulate and drywall each shed. They will have radiant heating in the floors for the winter, ceiling fans and swamp coolers for summer. We will upgrade to air conditioning if we need to. Each kennel will be furnished with a comfy sofa or overstuffed chair for napping. The dogs will be as snug as a bug in a rug.

Their runs will be a huge 80′ x 80′ and fill with trees, hammocks, chairs for us to relax on and a million smells, new each day. They will have their very own playgroups of their own best friends and plenty of room for us to hang out with them.

The first shed we need is to cover our well pump and filter. We decided to keep the feel all over the property we would use a Hurst Ranch Shed for this too. It will go next to our Hurst Ranch Barn Shed. This will cost approx $2000, perhaps less as we have been offered a discount on labor. Thank you, yes!!!

Tumors and dentals and vet bills! Oh my!

“There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home.” I’m sure if our doggies had ruby slippers they’d all click there heels and wish for a home themselves. But for most of them, there is a bit of a journey to get to their forever homes that often involves vet visits, procedures, and a bit of recovery time in a foster home. Lately it seems like more and more of our dogs are having to go down this road and our vet bills are becoming more daunting than the dark forests of Oz.

We love what we do and we love saving all of these medical needs dogs. Every dog that we rescue has a special place in our hearts, but it really is the tough cases the usually touch us all the most. We are so blessed to have such generous donors and friends that help us continue our mission of saving lives one dog at a time. We are also very lucky to have credit to help cover the mounting vet costs when the donations just aren’t enough. Unfortunately we are maxed out right now and the bills just keep coming in. Just in the month of March, we had $4,570 in vet bills for 6 dogs! (Duncan-FHO surgery, dental $1176.94 / Betty spay, mammary tumor removals, and dental…Macy dental and mass removal $1200.94 / Mia ear and skin infections $1701.01 / Felicia-diabetes exam and blood test $300.59 / Marcus euthanisia and creamation $191.25) We owe thousands of dollars on our credit accounts for dogs currently in our sanctuary program, who have long since been adopted, and who have even crossed the rainbow bridge.

So we plea with our friends and supporters once more. Please please help us continue the tireless work that we do to give the best quality of life to every dog that comes to our rescue. Every dollar adds up and no donation is too small. Does your company offer a donation matching program? Add us to that even. We truly are so very grateful for each and every single donation received. Every dollar we get goes directly back to our dogs for their daily care, medical needs, transport, and boarding. We are 100% volunteer run and no volunteer takes a salary for the jobs we do. We help, love, and care for these dogs on our own time, often our own dime, and solely out of the kindness of our hearts.

Soon She Will Be Bright As A New Penny

A friend showed up unexpectedly with a family in tow at 9:30 pm the other night! Janice was asked to look at their dog’s skin. They took her to a vet who wasn’t able to help. They stated that they adopted her about 2 months ago from Woods Humane Society where she was just fine. Currently, half of her fur is missing,  and she has bloody rips in her skin where she is aggressively scratching her wounded skin. She looks miserable! We took Penny into our rescue, and transported her to our vet the next day, who treated her for a bacterial infection caused by allergies. Now she is on antibiotics, medicated shampoo and allergy meds and in several weeks or months​ she will be as good as new. She is about 6-7 years old and needs a foster or an Adopter! Penny is very laid back and easy-going. She does well with the other foster dogs, and is great with the bunny. Penny is not a barker. We are working on house training, and she is learning to use the doggy door. Donations towards Penny’s medical bills are very much appreciated!

A Gentle Girl Named Babe

My name is Babe and I am searching for a new family. I thought I would be with my momma for the rest of my life, but my momma has Alzheimer’s, and is slowly forgetting to care for me. I like to think I have been a faithful and loving companion to my momma for all 11 years of my life, but the assisted facility thinks it is time to share my love with a new family. My human momma unfortunately has Alzheimers and it is the worst thing ever, to know that someone loves you so much, but just can’t seem to remember who I am or that I need care. My family has made this difficult decision to help me find a loving family that will care for me for the rest of my life. I am a gentle girl who would do best with an older family that can take me for walks a few times a day and help me shed a few pounds to get down to a healthier weight. I have never really been around cats or younger children, but I do ok with other dogs. I am spayed, up to date on my shots, and in general good health for my age.

Would you consider being my final forever family and promise to love me like my momma wants me to be loved? I am being fostered in the Bay Area of Northern California. Please get your applications in fast! I am a keeper!

Tommy Boy’s Wish to See Again

IMG_3013My name is Tommy Boy, and I need your help. I am not sure why I have not been able to find my forever family yet? I have tried as hard as I could to be a good boy, and people tell me that I am the sweetest boy ever! I agree with that, but because I recently lost my sight, I am not as happy as I used to be. I run into walls, and get lost (inside) easily. I have accidents in the house if I can’t find my way outside. I cry a lot because I am scared all the time, unless someone is with me, and I know that I am not alone. I sometimes howl at night, when it’s really quiet and dark, because I can’t find my foster peeps! I spent the first part of my life in a small kennel used for breeding. I think that is why I really, really, like being with someone. I understand that I am a pup that needs a lot of work, and I totally get it. I just can’t adjust to being blind, and after 2 years of this, I am about to give up, to be honest. I feel like I’ll never find a family to love me in this condition. My IMG_3026quality of life is not what it should be. I am asking my SCCR friends for a huge favor? I am begging you to help me see again! I think I could find a place to call my own if I could see! Other than being sad, because I can’t see, I am the sweetest soul! I love everyone I meet, including kids and other dogs. I am already neutered, mostly house-trained, up to date with shots, and good with cats!!! I am still active, and I am a playful and loving pup! I am otherwise quite healthy. I will make someone very happy if only I can see again. I know I am asking a lot of my friends at SCCR, but because they all love me, they are trying to help me. Can you find it in your heart to help me be a happy boy again? I sure hope so!!!

The surgery to restore Tommy Boy’s sight will cost about $5,000 dollars. Tommy will also need to stay with someone living close to the doctor in the San Carlos/San Jose, CA area while recovering. Every donation, large and small will help get us closer to this goal. Whoever adopts this little love-bug will NOT be disappointed! We all love this gentle little soul!

Who could turn in a sweet soul like this, and on her birthday?! Buddy was turned in by her owners on her ninth birthday to a Southern California shelter. She was confused, scared and needed help! We saw this love muffin and knew we had to spring her out of there ASAP. Thanks to our supporters we were able to put her on the freedom train! 

When we got her to our vet we found Buddy has a large tumor on her bottom, a mammary tumor, and another on her hip. She also has a cherry eye and severely infected ears. On a good note, her teeth are pretty good for a nine year old!

Miss Buddy, or Miss Bee (Bee-u-ti-ful!) as we’ve been calling her, is as sweet as they come. Not a mean bone in this gentle soul’s body. She must have been fed a little too much, as she now needs a lot of exercise and a low calorie diet to get her in shape. Fortunately, she loves her walks! Once her medical issues are addressed, she will be ready for a forever home. In the meantime, any help toward her medical care, large or small, is much appreciated!

Saving a Sweet, Bonded Pair

robinsccrSometimes, life is full of surprises. That’s what happened last week when Second Chance Cocker Rescue heard about a sweet, male dog named Robin at the Baldwin Park Shelter in Southern California. We went in to pull Robin, and found out he had a mate with him. A sweet, petite girl named Princess. While we are at our capacity with many medical needs dogs, we couldn’t separate these two sweethearts! They took their freedom ride together! They both barked, “hooray!”

Robin is about 11 years old, Princess is about 9. They were surrendered together. Robin is blind, and his owners dumped him because they didn’t want an old, blind dog anymore. We don’t know the story behind Princess being dumped, but looking at her, she has not been well taken care of. We were told they both lived their lives as outdoor dogs.

Robin is as sweet as can be! He loves people princess-sccr1and other dogs. He adores his mate Princess so much, when she walks away from him he cries! Robin has infected ears and was covered with flea dirt when we got him. He has been bathed and is much more comfortable. He is a little guy, around 17 pounds.

 

Princess also has a very sweet disposition. She is very loving and good with dogs and people too. She is also about 17 pounds.
Both will be getting full vet care this week. Robin needs his eyes checked and an overall on his health. Princess has a cherry eye and an open mammary tumor. Both will be taken care of ASAP. Unfortunately, female dogs who are not spayed often get these mammary tumors. Paws crossed she will have a clean bill of health soon. Both need to be spayed/neutered too.
