Dodger Hits a Home Run!

dodgerThis poor guy was turned in by his owners last week as a “euth request.” Fortunately, the shelter did not deem him a candidate.   An amazing woman got him out of the shelter, and is taking care of him. SCCR has offered to make him one of our Sanctuary Dogs.

Meet Dodger. He is a purebred, black, 14 year, adorable, sweet old guy.

Dodger needs to get some meat put back on his bones; he’s really, really skinny. The family that dumped him said he was incontinent. His left eye is completely white with a caratact. His teeth are in terrible condition. His nails are overgrown, and his ears are smelly and matted. He hasn’t been taken care of in a very long time.

Dodger will be visiting our vet to see what needs to be done.

We are able to help dogs like Dodger, who may get passed up on because of their age, thanks to our supporters. We are also able to provide medical care for these dogs for their entire lives through our Sanctuary Program. Any donations you can provide, large or small are so appreciated. Dodger is already wagging his tail with gratitude!

Just as our Los Angeles Dodgers are having a winning season, it looks like this sweet boy named Dodger will too!

Saving a Sweet, Bonded Pair

robinsccrSometimes, life is full of surprises. That’s what happened last week when Second Chance Cocker Rescue heard about a sweet, male dog named Robin at the Baldwin Park Shelter in Southern California. We went in to pull Robin, and found out he had a mate with him. A sweet, petite girl named Princess. While we are at our capacity with many medical needs dogs, we couldn’t separate these two sweethearts! They took their freedom ride together! They both barked, “hooray!”

Robin is about 11 years old, Princess is about 9. They were surrendered together. Robin is blind, and his owners dumped him because they didn’t want an old, blind dog anymore. We don’t know the story behind Princess being dumped, but looking at her, she has not been well taken care of. We were told they both lived their lives as outdoor dogs.

Robin is as sweet as can be! He loves people princess-sccr1and other dogs. He adores his mate Princess so much, when she walks away from him he cries! Robin has infected ears and was covered with flea dirt when we got him. He has been bathed and is much more comfortable. He is a little guy, around 17 pounds.

 

Princess also has a very sweet disposition. She is very loving and good with dogs and people too. She is also about 17 pounds.
Both will be getting full vet care this week. Robin needs his eyes checked and an overall on his health. Princess has a cherry eye and an open mammary tumor. Both will be taken care of ASAP. Unfortunately, female dogs who are not spayed often get these mammary tumors. Paws crossed she will have a clean bill of health soon. Both need to be spayed/neutered too.

Our Newest Bed & Biscuit Guest

june-2We were contacted by a young woman who was desperately searching for a safe place for her beloved pet. She knew that sweet June would not last long in a shelter, because June has never known anything but the loving care of her family. They had one week to find a safe place, and they reached out to Second Chance Cocker Rescue for help.

Meet the newest guest in our Bed & Biscuit program! We welcomed sweet little June this week, and what a wonderful addition she is. June is 11 years young, and is very healthy for her age. She is having some ear issues and will need a complete physical in order to give her proper care.

The Bed & Biscuit is a resort style residence that allows us to house up to ten additional senior Cockers at private kennel in Riverside County. There are comfy couches to nap on, dog beds all over the floor, a huge play area with trees to hangout in during the day. The inside walls of the building have been painted to look like a living room so the dog will feel as much at home as possible. These seniors are available for a Sanctuary home, but can stay here forever if they don’t get chosen by a family.  The cost to house, feed and keep these dogs is $1250 a month. Medical care is extra and averages $800 per senior per year. We have a extra soft spot for senior Cocker Spaniels and would like to invite you to join us supporting this project!

Sweet Lucy is getting a Second Chance

IMG_0436Second Chance Cocker Rescue makes a promise to all the dogs we rescue. They will ALWAYS be taken care of.

Lucy was adopted out 5 years ago to a gentleman in Nevada. He passed away, and Lucy was returned to us at 10 yrs old because we always take our dogs back.

She has several medical problems we need to deal with. She has a torn ACL that we are treating with acupuncture and a brace, her liver enzymes are high and she has bladder stones. We are making sure she has good care, but needIMG_0451 help paying for her vet bills. Any help you can give is so appreciated!

Lucy is being fostered, and her foster dad Gil has decided she will stay with him as a Sanctuary girl. He sent us these photos. Look how happy she is!

Second Chance Cocker Rescue wants to thank Gil and all our other foster families, forever families and donors. It takes a village!

Joe is Seeing with his Heart

JoeWe rescued sweet Joe at the Santa Cruz shelter last week. He is blind, has a collapsed vertebrae and bad skin. Fortunately, we immediately got a foster mom for him in Paso Robles. She is taking great care of him and has reported that despite his condition, his tail is always wagging.

He bumps into her other blind dogs, but they don’t seem to mind. He has mastered going out the doggie door, so he is very smart. He shows no signs of aggression. He likes to explore and picks up the scent of their rabbit. He seems happy and content.

We would love to find a forever home for Joe. He is eligible for our Sanctuary Program. In this program, you provide the home and love, we provide medical care for the life of the dog. It is a win-win opportunity.

Of course, any amount you can donate to help with Joe’s current vet bills will help!

Skin and Bones Senior in Desperate Need of TLC

Emily3Say hello to this beautiful 14 year old senior we named Emily. She was found wandering the streets of San Jacinto, CA. She is an average height of a Cocker but a skin and bones weight of 15.2 pounds. She was probably having trouble finding food to survive. Since we’ve had her, she’s been eating well, and will hopefully start putting on weight soon. 
Her teeth were in terrible shape and our vet had to remove all of them. She’s now eating softened kibble and canned food. She may be hearing impaired as she sleeps soundly through loud noises around her. 
She is great with other dogs, and a total love bug with humans.  
Would you consider making this angel part of your family? Emily is eligible for our Sanctuary Program. This means, if you decide to make her a forever part of your family, we will take care of all medical expenses for her entire life! You get a great dog as a family member without the worry of medical bills. It’s a win-win situation!

Our Big Dream for the Future

We have a dream of building our own facility. We want a place where you can come visit us and meet all the dogs; a place where the dogs can live in comfort until they are adopted or find a foster home. We want live in staff, heated and air conditioned cute houses for the dogs with huge runs where they can run and play with their friends. We want a Bed & Biscuit area for the seniors and we want it bigger and better than ever before. We want it in a location that is easy to get to and fun to visit. We want to give you tours and let you stay to play with the dogs.

Just last year a supporter left us something in her will. It was just enough to get us thinking that maybe, just maybe with a lot of hard work and more money our dream could be a reality. We are not afraid of hard work and we hope we can raise the money to make it all come true. SONY DSC

We took our first check and started an investment account that is the start of our dowpayment for some property. We are calling it the Building Fund. It will go towards buying property, buildings and equipment. We are years off from making our dream come true but we wanted to let you know our plans and if anyone wants to help us make them come true you can make a donation and mark it for the “Building Fund”. We will add it into our investment account and let it grow while we write business plans, work on grants and make this happen.

Dolly is Loving Life at the Bed & Biscuit

Meet Dolly, the newest addition to Second Chance Cocker Rescue’s Bed & Biscuit home for senior dogs.Dolly before1

We found Dolly in terrible shape. Her teeth are beyond horrible. Once her teeth have been cleaned, she will probably lose most of what teeth she has left (many are already missing.)  We’re not sure about her vision yet, but with her cataracts, she appears to have minimal vision.

Even with all of that fur, she was mellow and calm while being groomed.  She is very sweet and is doing great with the other dogs at the B&B (2 of her friends are also blind!)

We were so happy to have the opportunity to bring Dolly to the Bed & Biscuit. She is a dog that would have most likely been skipped over at the shelter. Thanks to donations we are able to pull dogs like Dolly and give them a second chance to be loved and cared for and best of all, they give love back a million times over.Dolly after1

Baxter’s Christmas Wish is Coming True!

Baxter update photos 1Hi, it’s me, Baxter. Remember right before Christmas I made a wish that I would be able to see again? You can read my story here. Well, thanks to the wonderful people at Second Chance Cocker Rescue my wish is coming true!

I have been vetted and approved for cataract surgery. It will be happening this Wednesday with Dr. Schmidt of Veterinary Opthalmology Services, Inc. in Arroyo Grande, CA. Guess what this means? By Wednesday evening I will be able to open my eyes and see again! I will be able to take walks and not bump into things, or be hesitant when going up and down on a curb. I will be able to seeBaxter update photos best the flowers that I sniff, the balls that I chase, and all the happy faces who have been taking care of me and cheering me on since I was rescued, especially my foster mom!

Baxter update photos 3Cataract surgery is quick and the recovery is easy, but the expense is high. Second Chance Cocker Rescue has been rallying for my cause for over a month. Unfortunately, they are still $1,000 short. Any amount you can donate is much appreciated. They will be posting update photos soon too.

Bed & Biscuit – We Need Your Help!

Grover1The Bed & Biscuit is a comfy home for 10,
Second Chance Cocker Rescue senior Cockers. The biscuit has a sofa, lots of dog beds all over the floor. It’s heated in the winter and runs cool fans in the summer. There is a huge run that spans the entire width of the property with trees, toys and great napping spots. We are painting the inside with murals so it looks like a living room.
Current residents are Bucky, Toby, Vayle, Elke, Grover, Honey, Riley, Quinn, and Powers.Powers
As soon as the murals are done, we will do a photo shoot, to show everyone how they look. If you chose to become a Bed & Biscuit Club member and donate $125 or more per month, you will be invited to our yearly behind the scenes tour of the Bed & Biscuit.
Bed and Biscuit Club monthly donation membership comes with some great incentives, including invitations to a Spring Bed and Biscuit Club Afternoon Tea and a B&B Club Fall Party.
