Peeling Away The Walls

We have started the repairs to the trailer. First we focused on the back bedroom and started with the water damage in the ceiling…we found some critters had been making their home in the rafters. We put out traps and battled the wasp nest in the circuit box. That wild life sure likes to make it self at home.

We will be replacing dry wall, struts and insulation in the ceiling and walls where there is water damage. We can’t tell how extensive it is until we pull open the wall. We have started on the worst area hoping it will be better in other areas. We need Lowe’s gift cards and donations to purchase dry wall, 2x4s, insulation and paint. We found some one to volunteer for the labor…Thank you Ray!!

Several wonderful supporters have offered some amazing donations:
-Lisa and Mission Linen are offering us towels, linens and paper goods
-Debra and Joan have offered washer dryer sets
-Mary and Wayne have offered pavers, we need help getting them from Santa Barbara to Jamestown. Anyone have a trailer that can take a heavy load?

We also need: dry vac, 600 sq ft floor tile, half wine barrels, for planting flowers in, and anything else you can think of. Thank you so much for your support!

You can help in many ways…sweat equity, donations of building materials and  equipment and for larger cash donations we can offer the following:

$100-250 buy a brick
$500 Plaque on a chair
$1000 A memorial bench
$2500 Name a building in honor of your dog

Deciding On A Theme

Picking out the look and feel of our Sanctuary was difficult. Once we decided on a Gold Mining Town theme, figuring out how to create it was even harder until we saw the Hurst Ranch Sheds for sale just down the road at the Hurst Ranch Feed Store. This is four sheds placed together to look like a street. They run 8 x 8 to 10 x 12 each. Big enough to house a few Cocker Spaniels very comfortably. For the dog kennels we are going to insulate and drywall each shed. They will have radiant heating in the floors for the winter, ceiling fans and swamp coolers for summer. We will upgrade to air conditioning if we need to. Each kennel will be furnished with a comfy sofa or overstuffed chair for napping. The dogs will be as snug as a bug in a rug.

Their runs will be a huge 80′ x 80′ and fill with trees, hammocks, chairs for us to relax on and a million smells, new each day. They will have their very own playgroups of their own best friends and plenty of room for us to hang out with them.

The first shed we need is to cover our well pump and filter. We decided to keep the feel all over the property we would use a Hurst Ranch Shed for this too. It will go next to our Hurst Ranch Barn Shed. This will cost approx $2000, perhaps less as we have been offered a discount on labor. Thank you, yes!!!

Just a reminder all donations that come in by July 31st will enter the donor in our Win a trip to the new Sanctury! Just a $20 donation-mark  your checks ” Building Fund” and you are entered 10 times and the donation will go towards purchasing our very first shed!.

Sanctuary Update

Looking down from the trainer

Dear Sanctuary Supporters,

Our first update on the Sanctuary work! We  got the utilities turned on and got a wonderful surprise. The previous owner told us we would need a new hot water heater and HVAC system in the trailer..nope, they all work just fine. In fact the hot water heater is almost new.  Now, we need to do some repair on the water damage from last winters storms and replace the carpet with tile. Lastly, the trailer needs to be spray washed and painted. Does anyone want to come help with those projects? The more volunteer help with this kind of work the quicker we will be up and running. We will also need some cash donations to purchase building materials and donations of building materials if you have them. Like the tile for the trailer. We can find it on sale for about $1 a square foot or if you have any old extra boxes of tile around we can use it in the trailer and the kennels.

We also need to build a shed over the well very soon to protect it. That will cost about $1500-2000 and we can use your help building it.

Before Picture of the Trailer

The next big step is the kennel permit. I have to sit down next week and pull together all the paperwork and drawing for the kennels. The design is in my head but needs to end up on a map so the Building Dept and Animal Control can see it. When the first draft of paperwork is ready I will take it to the head of Animal Control and make sure everything we need is there.  Then we need to raise $2,900 to submit the kennel application to the county building department. So far, we have raised $2,000 this week and I hope you  will help us make the whole $2900 by the end of the week so I can get this application in as fast as possible. It will take 3-6 months to process by the county depending on how well I have documented everything. I don’t want to make this process any longer than we have to by delaying because of a lack of a few hundred dollars.

One view outside the trailer

What we need this week is:
$2900 for the kennel permit application fee
$1000-1500 for a well shed
$500-1000 to fix up trailer
Handy men and women to help fix the trailer
new or used shop vac, wheel barrow, basic tool set, shovel, etc…

With great anticipation,

With the help of your many donations, we were able to pay for several life-saving surgeries, provide much needed dentals, spays, neuters, and other important medical procedures for the 160+ dogs that came into our rescue this year! Plus we were able to help pay for the daily medical needs of our beloved sanctuary dogs! We could not do all of this without your help!

As we look towards 2019, we are hoping to break ground on our much dreamed about Cocker Sanctuary! We are looking for donations towards our building fund so that we can build a relaxing and comfortable home for dogs who would be without a home of their own. You too can help make this dream a reality! Donate today and your tax-deductible donation will go towards providing a forever home for cocker spaniels in need.

Medical Pups Hoping For A New Start In The New Year

Kawaii truly is the embodiment of her name! “Pretty” in Japanese, Kawaii is such a pretty girl inside and out, she’s just in need of a little extra TLC so that she can really shine!

Coming to us from VCAS, Kawaii was turned in as a stray with a massive tumor hanging from her belly. It’s the biggest tumor I’ve seen this year! She’s is also severely matted and in need of a full grooming. Her poor condition does not dull her sunny and sweet personality! Kawaii LOVES belly rubs and just goes crazy for pets and cuddles. Her full tail happily wags when you talk to her and tell her what a pretty girl she is! Kawaii has been non-reactive to both cats and other dogs while at the shelter. I got to visit her on Christmas and she was a delight to play with. She is going to be a wonderful family dog!

Kawaii is being pulled from the shelter tomorrow and will be going directly to Dr. Card on Friday for her mass removal surgery. We are currently in need of donations to help cover her estimated $1,200 surgery and a loving foster home for her to go to by this Saturday at the absolute latest.

If you would like to help our sweet Kawaii, please call us directly at (805)558-0100 or fill out an application.

Buddy Blue is a sweet boy who is also in desperate need of our help!

IMG_8012

Sweet Buddy Blue is just a little train wreck. Buddy is only about 10 years old, but due to his condition, looks so much older. He was pulled from the shelter several years ago and given to relatives by his adopter thinking that he would help them get over the loss of their other dog. Unfortunately for Buddy, he didn’t get the care and medical attention that he needed. His old adopter asked us to help step in and save his life.

Buddy Blue is scheduled to see our vet next week, but we would like to get him out of his current home and into a foster home urgently. Buddy would do best in a home with dogs that are the same size as he is or maybe a little bigger. He is afraid of small dogs. Buddy has not been tested with kids or cats. What Buddy needs most of all is a loving family who will help him heal and get on the road to a healthy and happy life. Buddy is a loving boy who likes to just chill with his people. Need a Netflix binge buddy? Buddy Blue is the boy for you!

Buddy Blue is scheduled for an exam on 01/03, but we are sure that it will lead to a few procedures for him. If you would like to help cover his medical expenses, please donate. Every dollar helps!

If you would like to help foster our Buddy Blue, please call us directly at (805)558-0100 or fill out an application.

Rusty! The coolest one-eyed pup in town!

Meet the newest, and maybe handsomest, member of the Second Chance Cocker Club, Rusty!!! Rusty comes to us from Simi Valley, where he is well known and well loved in the local dog park community. Unfortunately, Rusty’s owner fell ill and Rusty found himself at the local shelter. They held him for as long as they could, hoping Rusty’s family would come and get him, but it just didn’t work out. Luckily for Rusty, our Rehoming Coordinator saw him pop up on the shelter website when he arrived and she recognized him as a pup her dogs used to play with at the dog park. She remembered Rusty’s sweet personality and her heart said that we needed to take him into our care if he ended up needing a place to go. So here we are now!

She remembered Rusty’s sweet personality and her heart said that we needed to take him into our care if he ended up needing a place to go. So here we are now! Rusty is now an SCCR pup and is loving life in his new foster home!

Rusty is about 9 years old, neutered, and up to date on his shots. He is house trained and good with other dogs. Rusty was well socialized, but being a one-eyed dog, he sometimes gets surprised when a dog or person sneaks up on his blind side. He does great though if you talk to him and tell him what you are doing before you do it. Rusty is very outgoing and quick to explore his new surroundings. He loves going to the park and his new furever family must promise to take him to the park to play and run around all of the time! He gets so excited to jump in the car and go for a ride because he thinks he is going to the park! Rusty is great with older, dog savvy kids too. Overall, Rusty is just an adorable goofball who wants nothing more than to be your shadow and spend all of his time with someone who will love him like he deserves to be loved!

Rusty is currently located in Oak Park, CA. We have promised the community that loves him so much that we would find the very best home for Rusty. If you’d like to give Rusty a loving home, please SCCR directly at (805) 558-0100 or fill out an application here. Help us find Rusty a perfect forever home before the holidays!

Seeking a very special person for our very special girl, Gina!

Gina is a 2 year old little girl who is a very sweet, loving dog but has had a rough couple years finding her furever home because of her rare bladder condition. Gina was born with an Ectopic Ureter, which led her to have constant accidents the first two years of her life and she will likely deal with incontinence for the rest of her life. Everyone had seemed to give up hope for Gina but we think that with the right living situation, she will be a fantastic family member for someone.

Let us introduce you to Gina! Isn’t she beautiful?!
Gina is a 2 year old little girl who is a very sweet, loving dog but has had a rough couple years finding her furever home because of her rare bladder condition.

Gina was born with an Ectopic Ureter, which led her to have constant accidents the first two years of her life. She had been bounced around to several different homes and it wasn’t until earlier this year, when she was taken in by a shelter in Fresno, CA, that they diagnosed her with the condition and raised the money for the corrective surgery. The only problem is this surgery is not always 100% effective and Gina will likely deal with incontinence for the rest of her life.

It was hopeful for Gina’s current home that she would become completely continent so she could be an indoor dog, but unfortunately in the three weeks that she has been there, she is not showing signs that this condition is fixed totally. The accidents are not constant anymore but she is not completely cured. She still leaks a bit and leaves a puddle when she’s napping. Gina has shown that she can hold it sometimes, but her accidents are usually unpredictable.

Gina is not fond of diapers and is quite adept at taking them off. Poor girl, she does get embarrassed when she has an accident, but she truly can’t control it. She’s hoping to find a home where she can come and go freely indoors and out and not be shamed for something she can’t help.

Gina has a very sweet disposition, though it does take her a bit to get to know and trust new people because of all she’s had to endure, but once she does all she wants from you is love and attention! And treats are nice too!! Gina will play if you really ask her to but she’d just as soon prefer to sit on you and be loved! She’s the perfect Netflix binge buddy!

Gina is in the process of learning her simple commands like sit and stay and is catching on quickly. Being so young and so smart, Gina is highly trainable and eager to please.

Gina is great with cats and other dogs. She has not been tested with kids yet. She is also spayed, up to date on her shots, and in great health aside from her bladder condition.

Everyone had seemed to give up hope for Gina but we think that with the right living situation, she will be a fantastic family member for someone. If you have a nice fenced in yard with room to spare for this sweet girl please consider adopting our beautiful little girl, Gina!

Gina is located in Henderson, NV.

Gina would like to remind our Friends of SCCR of all of the many Cockers that we care for every day who are receiving medical care. You can donate here to help provide for the needs of our sanctuary, hospice, special needs, and brand new rescue dogs.

A Gentle Girl Named Babe

My name is Babe and I am searching for a new family. I thought I would be with my momma for the rest of my life, but my momma has Alzheimer’s, and is slowly forgetting to care for me. I like to think I have been a faithful and loving companion to my momma for all 11 years of my life, but the assisted facility thinks it is time to share my love with a new family. My human momma unfortunately has Alzheimers and it is the worst thing ever, to know that someone loves you so much, but just can’t seem to remember who I am or that I need care. My family has made this difficult decision to help me find a loving family that will care for me for the rest of my life. I am a gentle girl who would do best with an older family that can take me for walks a few times a day and help me shed a few pounds to get down to a healthier weight. I have never really been around cats or younger children, but I do ok with other dogs. I am spayed, up to date on my shots, and in general good health for my age.

Would you consider being my final forever family and promise to love me like my momma wants me to be loved? I am being fostered in the Bay Area of Northern California. Please get your applications in fast! I am a keeper!

Lovey

URGENT! Gentle, sweet Lovey needs ear surgery on both ears as soon as possible! This little senior lady has had chronic ear issues that were left mostly untreated, until she came into the SCCR Sanctuary Program. It has come to that point for Lovey, that we either go forward with this ear procedure, or we will be forced to make a difficult decision because of her poor quality of life going forward. We are going to use a surgeon in Ventura, CA, so a foster for post-op care in that area would be deeply appreciated. The cost will be $4k to $4.5k. Lovey has reached the point now where all other options for her care have been tried and are no longer working. She is the sweetest, most darling girl,

IMG_3540
Lovey’s ear

and we believe that Lovey deserves to have a painless and comfortable life, surrounded by a family that loves her. Won’t you join with us to give Lovey the gift of comfort, in her senior years ahead? No gift is too small! Please help us to help Lovey!

Tommy Boy – So Close to Regaining his Sight

PUPDATE: Tommy Boy is getting close to getting his sight restored! Our estimate for surgery was $5,000, and we are now approximately $1,500 from our goal! The estimate does not include post-operative care, medication, or transportation. We would not be able to give Tommy Boy this gift, if it were not for our many loyal and devoted donors. Tommy Boy was not able to adjust as most dogs do, to his vision loss. Tommy has spent the last year crying, bumping into walls and other obstacles, howling at night, and feeling lost and alone. Tommy spent the first 8 years of his life locked in a kennel being used as a breeder. He had very little social interaction. Tommy is the sweetest little guy you will ever meet, despite his sad beginning. It is our dream to witness Tommy Boy romping and playing in the sun with his friends and pack-mates some day soon. Will you please consider helping to cover the remaining balance for his eye surgery? I know we can do this! We are so close to making this gentle boy’s wish come true!
