Our Pampered Chef Fundraiser

Katie 3Katie thinks that everyone should be cooking more, more dog treats that is. She wants to announce a new fundraiser we are doing with Pampered Chef. The fundraiser goes from now until Sept 15th.

Details:
-Everyone should have their orders direct shipped to them (because Katie is not doing it for you!).
-We get a % for every order you place.
-Everyone who orders will receive by email a receipt when the show is submitted.
-Checks will not be accepted on this show
-The sales tax is 8%

Katie also wanted to share this recipe for SnickerPoodles, dog treats with you all. she says your dog will love these cookies but she would rather you mail them all to her! They are great because they are made with ingredients you already have in your pantry and anything you don’t have Pampered Chef will.

SnickerPoodles!

Ingredients:
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup agave (the original recipe called for honey, but I prefer agave)
2 eggs
3 ¾ cups white flour
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ cup cornmeal
2 teaspoons cinnamon

Directions:

1. Mix vegetable oil, shortening, honey and eggs.
2. Beat well.
3. Add flour, soda and cream of tartar.
4. Knead dough until mixed well.
5. Shape dough by rounded teaspoons into balls.
6. Mix the cornmeal and cinnamon together in a bowl.
7. Roll balls in mixture.
8. Place 2 inches apart on a greased cookie sheet.
9. Press with a fork.
10. Bake for 8-10 minutes at 400F.

Mr. Magoo Is Famous Too

Magoo 2One of our favorite foster moms is Twilight Saga star, Marlane Barnes.  Recently she was the focus of an article on her rescue work where she mentions  our own sweet Mr Magoo.  Marlane also posted an article entitled “How to Get a Rescue Dog Adopted: Mr. Magoo’s Online Profile” at ProjectNoses.org. her website  chronicling the star’s time with the companion dogs she has fostered and showcasing, you guessed it, Mr Magoo!

Mr Magoo is a sweet little man with lots of energy who loves belly rubs and back scratches. Being blind and mostly deaf doesn’t slow him down at all! He can hear just enough to make a chew toy squeak and he loves it! If he picks up a new scent on the ground he is determined to find out what it is! He would probably do well with kids because he doesn’t mind getting scooted around or shooed from your snack. He is independent during the day but would love to sleep near you at night. Because of his blindness/determination to track scents, cats are not the best companions, but he seems to like other dogs. He’s not crazy about being crated, but he does well on his own in a room where he can still explore.

Mr Magoo is 10 years old and is eligible for our sanctuary program where we pay for all his medical expenses.

It is Raining Seniors

We have senior dogs coming out our ears! We have so many fabulous babies waiting for foster homes and Sanctuary homes we just had to let you know. It is our fault for saying yes every time someone called with a sad story but who could say no to these sweet faces? These babies desperately need foster homes. Can you help? Contact us at 805 687 4674 or fill out an application and we will call you right away. In order we have Bim and Coal, Jasper, Jr, Spencer and Katie, Maxi, Prince, Amber….they are all so sweet and deserve to spend the rest of their days in a loving home. For some of these babies it will be the only time they be loved and properly taken care of. Please, don’t make them wait any longer!

Lucky for Gus…

GusGus was found abandoned in a crate in a driveway. No food or water just Gus sitting in a wire crate with the sun beating down on him. He was so stressed it took two days for him to settle down.  A self styled “rescuer” from Santa Barbara pulled him out of the Devore shelter earlier this week. She decided she couldn’t handle him so she dumped him instead. This rescuer has quite a reputation among the legitimate rescues in town but she is still out there doing more damage than good.

Lucky for Gus he found SCCR. We take our rescue work seriously and he will now be taken care of for the rest of his life. He deserves nothing less. Gus is a sweet little velcro boy who loves nothing better than a snuggle or to just follow you around the house. He loves everyone  he meets and will be good with kids and he loves other dogs. Gus is about 6-7 years old and we have promised him the best home we can find.

buddy behind barsAs we sat down to pay our bills last month we came up short….really short. We were scrambling to figure out how to pay everyone and put a hold on any new dogs coming in until we got this taken care of. Just an hour after the board made that decision we got a call about a cocker at the Orange County shelter. He was exactly the kind of dog we could not afford to take. Eight years old, male with double cherry eye. We held firm, “We can not take this dog. We can’t pay our bills and we aren’t taking any dogs until we can.” Then we hear “How much do you need? If I get it for you will you take him?” …..oh yes, we can now!

Buddy's freedom picBuddy was so happy when we send our transporters to pull him. He is safe and sound and waiting for his surgery thanks to Christienne, our new fundraiser in OC!

 

Katie and Spencer

Katie and Spencer’s mom died and they ended up at the Orange County Shelter. Two seniors, grossly over weight and in terrible condition. How could we say no?  Carolyn got them in and her was her first report on Katie:

katie before“My goodness….this poor old girl has really been neglected.  Nails were horrible and two of them had curled back into her pads which no doubt contributed to her reluctance to walk…..ears were so gunky it was like scraping spoonfuls of dirt out, her skin is very dry and flaky, and shaving her was like trying to shave fur off a bowl of jello!  She is quite overweight, to the point where her little nub tail is actually buried in fat…..her eyes are just enormous with glaucoma pressure.  I am not sure if she will even be a candidate for chemical ablation because they might have ‘gone too far’ for it….more than likely we are looking at eye removal now.  Will find out at the vet tomorrow morning. But, she is cleaned up now 🙂  She is very sweet and good natured…just needs a diet and exercise and fix those eyes! This is the before picture”
Kaatie 2Katie’s after picture before her surgery. They both went to the vet yesterday and we got an update. “Quick update…..went to the vet today, obviously grossly overweight.  Both have ear infections, no big surprise.  Katie’s eyes are bad which we knew.  I have now scheduled her for surgery on Wednesday to have them both removed.  Dr. Card feels they are too damaged for chemical ablation to work like it should, so out they come.

Spencer beforeSpencer has the start of cataracts in both eyes, but not blind yet :-)) At least Katie will finally get some relief from the pain in those eyes. Spencer will be groomed tomorrow”

Alfie is an absolutely perfect fit!

Alfie and Megan“I just wanted to thank you and let you you know that Alfie (formerly Boomer) is an absolutely perfect fit for us!! I am amazed at what a good fit he is. You were totally right about him being cuddly and sweet, but playful and all-puppy! I love how he constantly looks up at you for love, attention and/or a snuggle. He has brought such a great fun little energy into our house, and I love it!

The best part is seeing what a great fit he is for Charlie (Adrian’s dog). She is really happy to have a buddy. They are adorable together!! She is a perfect big sister to him…Alfie will wrestle with her and chew on her ears and they play tug-of-war with toys. She often picks up toys and runs around with them to get his attention then will play keep away with him. She runs to chase balls and he just runs along side her, and at the dog park she taught him to jump in the kiddie pool and splash around. They are simply hilarious together. Just the right amount of energy to tire each other out, but also fine with just hanging out together.

And even though he is fun-loving, he is also well behaved. Great at stores and restaurants. And he is great with our neighbor’s 4-year old daughter who l-o-v-e-s to play with him….Thank you so much for keeping me in mind for different dogs and really getting to know what fit would be right. I know it’s a labor of love, but your work and everything you do is truly appreciated. -Megan”

No, Thank You, Jane!

We had a hard week working with some especially difficult shelters when we received this email from Jane, the rescue coordinator at the Camarillo shelter. It reminded us that there are some great shelters out there and how much we appreciate them.  Camarillo is at the top of that list and Jane is a big reason why. Here is what she had to say and it really brightened up our day:

“Long overdue, my friends, but recent visits from Lesley Bloomer and Karen Perkins reminded me once again how very fortunate we at are VCAS to have the support and camaraderie of ALL of you in the Santa Barbara rescue network and I want to take this opportunity to thank you once again..

In meeting and interacting with each of you, you’ve often heard me say that your S.B. network “makes me want to move to Santa Barbara” because you supported and inspired me during some very rocky times in past years and helped VCAS on its journey toward a higher live release rate.   Through some periods when other rescues were at odds with us, you never lost sight of the fact that there were animals here that needed help and you were always such a pleasure to work with.  That support was invaluable.

Thank you, Lesley, for transporting for your network and for stepping up for the herding breeds (and others!) and working with those that have behavioral issues in need of healing.  Elizabeth never says no to a Cocker — always shows up with some humor and a light heart and makes all of us smile!  Janelle dropped into my life like an angel from the blue and became the “godmother” of our joint pony express transports to Sunny Sky’s in WA (funded by K-9 Pals).  She is incredibly nurturing & responsible and an A-1 transporter.  She wrote the book on the “spa stopover transport system” — providing relaxing evenings out of the crates!  We would not have built the relationship with Sunny Sky’s that we have today without her!   Annabelle is my fluffy-dog go-to gal.  She also likes Jack Russells and some of the scrappier breeds — just like me!  The folks at D.A.W.G. have always inspired me!  Thank you all for extending your kindness to some of our dogs here in Ventura County as well — with your fosters and, most recently, including five of our little guys n’ gals on the great RV caravan transport to shelters in the Western states.  Karen, thank you for standing by for the Frenchies and for also transporting for your network.  I feel honored to have become part of “Jellie’s world”!
Please extend my appreciation to others in your organizations and network whose names I may not know.  You are ALL so instrumental in helping us make a difference!

Lance The Greeter of the Park

I thought you would like to see this photo of Lance (formerly Grayson) who Tom and I adopted in November of 2012 from the foster home in Hemet.  He is a wonderful dog and is doing very well with us (in this photo he has just had his summer trim, since it is getting hot in the desert where we are spending the winter — usually he has a bit more hair than this).  We live in an Over 55 residential area here, where there are many rescue dogs who all play together at the dog park.  When we first started taking Lance there he was very shy, nervous around new people (especially men) and didn’t know how to play.  But now he is one of the friendliest dogs there, always goes up to greet new arrivals (both people and dogs) and is much admired by the other owners.  He even runs around with the dogs some of the time, but he always comes back to check in with Tom and me (we were both shy kids when we were young, and we figure he takes after us and needs some reassurance).  One of the women who goes to the dog park is writing a book of stories about rescue dogs and she interviewed us about Lance the other day.  When the book is published, I will send you a copy.
Also, I am going to put a contribution into the mail for the Second Chance program… Tom and I greatly admire and appreciate what you do for so many dogs.  I will make this contribution in memory of my previous dog from you, Molly, and we will do another one at the end of this year to honor Lance.

Zane

20140305_165823Zane was abandoned in his back yard when his family moved and left a note that said they couldn’t deal with him and please find him a home. The landlord keep him fed and safe until he found us and we agreed to help at once. We went over to meet Zane and he was standing on the porch growling. We brought some chicken breasts and fed him until he was eating out of our hand but he still would not let us put a leash on him. We came back the next morning and tried again with no luck. We called in reinforcements and showed up that afternoon with our trainer, Andrea, a large crate and some exercise pens. We surrounded him and the crate with exercise pens and loaded the crate with more chicken. Once he relaxed we started making the pen smaller and smaller until he popped himself into the crate.  Just like that, he was caught and we didn’t have to manhandle him to do it.
 
20140307_131624Once we let him out of the crate at home Zane took a few hours and then decided we were his saviors. He was filthy and stinky but we waited two days before we were comfortable trying to clip and bathe him.  We clipped him until the clippers gave out. His coat is so matted and dirty they couldn’t finish the job.  He looked a lot like a walrus.
 
20140310_132827We gave him a bath and made an appointment for a grooming with our favorite groomer,  Anja, and the vet for the following day. We will make sure his new life is full of love and nothing but the best of care.
