This year, with your unfailing support, we rescued over 140 dogs and supported 34 dogs in loving sanctuary homes. We created our new “Team Lead” positions which allow us to expand into new geographical areas covering the state of California more completely than ever. We welcomed four new team leads into our organization and they are proudly leading SCCR rescue efforts in their locations. They have helped us rescue dogs from hopeless situations giving them not just hope but medical attention, loving families and a promise that we will always be there if they need us.
Buddy and Bo’s mom passed away when on vacation leaving them at the pet sitters with no instructions on what to do with them so the sitter took them to a shelter in Sacramento. Even though Buddy is a senior with health problems and Bo is snippy with strangers we found them a home with two mom’s who think they are absolutely perfect. Tiny was “rescued” by an independent rescuer who abandoned her in a foster home after pulling her from a shelter in Los Angeles. We stepped in, got her medical care, surgery and found her a sanctuary home where we will make sure she is properly cared for, for the rest of her life. That is what real rescue is and we won’t settle for anything less
Talia was hit by a car and sitting in a Bakersfield shelter with a shattered pelvis when we found her. With your support we were able to pay for the $4,000 surgery, nurse her through her recovery and find her a home where she is now the reigning princess. Annie was pulled from the Stockton shelter. At 3 years old she was already completely blind from cataracts. We asked you to help us give her sight back and you answered without hesitation. One surgery and six weeks recovery later her dad tells us “It’s like a whole new world opened for her.”
We are looking forward to this coming year, here at SCCR. We will be launching our new HALO Cocker Spaniel Registry in February. It will offer Cocker Spaniel owners another option to ensure their babies are safe when they are gone.
We will continue to grow without sacrificing the quality of work we do and we are proud to have you with us every step. We thank you for being an important part of Second Chance and helping us save lives,

Sarah Jane is young, sweet and a beautiful girl. Why is it taking so long to find her the right home? She was born with half of her front left leg missing. She and her sister came into the shelter at the same time as strays. Their family never came to find them. Her sister was adopted out the first day but not Sarah Jane. She sat in the kennel all alone until they called us to rescue her.
Sarah Jane was born with this defect and she doesn’t know any different. She thinks she is just the same as everyone else. She runs like a minx and plays like a tomboy. She loves life and knows how to live it.
However, we are starting to see some problems with her good leg. It is having to take far more pressure than it should and we are concerned Sarah Jane will have some long term problems with it. Since it is all she has up there we needed to make sure stays as strong as possible.
We talked to our vets and did some research on prosthetic legs. We can have one custom made for her to wear when she is out playing. That way she can still join in all the fun but keep her legs strong and healthy. We don’t want Sarah Jane to have to spend the rest of her life on the sideines watching all the other dogs play. We want her to have the same life full of fun as all the four legged kids in her neighborhood. She deserves it!

Nubian says he is thankful for his foster dad’s slipper but is really hoping that this holiday he will find a home.
We are holding a super duper Halloween Costume Contest for cockers this year. Molly is our spokesCocker and will be policing the contest. Molly wants to see some wild and crazy cockers in costume. For a $25 or more donation for our senior cockers you can enter your favorite picture of your cocker in costume and win some fabulous prizes:

Lulu had her cataract surgery. She can now see again for the first time in years!! We got a report from her family.

Romeo was only 12 weeks old when his family called us and said they wanted to find him a new home because he was blind. He had juvenile cataracts and was having trouble adjusting. When we met Romeo he was afraid to come out of the crate and he flinched when anyone got too close. He had nightmares when he was sleeping where he cried and whimpered.
The first thing we did was make an appointment with our eye specialist in Arroyo Grande. We have to wait until the 25th to see her but in the mean time we started working on his self confidence and training him to deal with the world as a blind boy. He has learned to come when called, to navigate strange places and meet new people. He has learned to deal with stairs, door ways and walking on and off leash. He now loves to go for off leash beach walks, meeting new dogs and people. The nightmares have subsided and now he loves to tease the other foster dogs in the house.
We can’t wait to schedule his surgery so he can see again but until then he will be a well adjusted boy and will enjoy his puppy months instead of living in fear of the black world around him.
Bella Maria is an older woman who has fallen for a younger man. She and Roscoe lost their human family when they were taken to the shelter but they vowed not to be separated and managed to convince the shelter staff to beg us to take them both. They are adorable together. They sleep together, they check in with one another all the time and they share food bowls.
Bella Maria is about 8-10 yrs old and a purebred Cocker girl while Roscoe is only 3 yrs old and a Maltese /Shih tzu who looks just like a Muppet and snorts when he is excited. She is a sweet gentle soul and he is silly and full of himself. Roscoe has cataracts but she takes care of him and he watches out for her. When they came in we could tell no one took very good care of them for a long time. Bella’s nails were grown into the pads of her feet, several of her teeth were abscessed and their fur was matted and filthy. But as long as they were together they were happy.
We got them both cleaned up and gave Bella Marie a dental and pedicure. Now Bella Marie and Roscoe desperately need a foster home while they are waiting for their forever family to find them. Can you help?
Quiggly’s dad was elderly and when he passed away at home the paramedics did not know that Quiggly was in the back yard. They left without notifying anyone about him. Lucky for Quiggly the neighbor noticed him and started throwing food over the fence and dripping her hose over so he would have food and water until she could get him out of there.
Her friend Frank agreed to keep him until we could pick him up on Saturday. When we met Frank and Quiggly in Elk Grove after our annual picnic he was stressed and confused from everything that had happened to him. He quickly settled down in his foster home and immediately made friends with their other foster girl, Sarah Jane. He and Sarah Jane would play and play and play for hours.
