Sammy Got Hit By a Car

One year old Sammy is going into surgery for his broken leg last week. When his family found out the cost they called us for help and relinquished him. The poor boy has a really bad break. We need good thoughts for him to be able to keep his leg. There are two breaks and a floating section. Since it happened over 48hrs before we go him his chance of a successful surgery of placing a plate on to hold all 3 pieces in place weren’t good but Dr. Jackson made it work. Now we put him on bed rest to make sure it heals well. There is still a chance we might have to amputate. Once his leg is healed then he goes back for cherry eye surgery and a neuter. Poor boy. That is a lot of bed rest for a youngster.

We need your help to pay for his surgery. Your contribution will make an impact, whether you donate $5 or $500. Every little bit helps. Thank you for your support. https://www.facebook.com/donate/1072736169943489/

Who Rescued Who

Frannie adopted Chester hoping he would get along with her mother who has Alzheimer’s. Well, lordy did they get along. Chester is the best thing in the world for her. He seems to know how much she needs him.

Help us Change Winnie’s Life

Help us change Winnie’s life and show her that most people are good!

Poor Winnie was rescued from the Riverside shelter late Friday. At only about 4 years old, this sweet angel has been through hell. She is super skinny, covered in wounds from being mauled by another dog, and foxtails are embedded all over her body. She has a deep scratch in her cornea. The first day she wouldn’t let anyone touch her she was so traumatized.

We got her medical care started immediately. Who knows what else she has going on under all of this. We know she has been through something terrible. Poor baby, she looked so defeated.

We put her on antibiotics and pain meds and by the time they kicked in she was sound asleep and slept like the dead for hours. She was so exhausted and she finally felt safe enough to relax. By today she had decided that moma Carolyn was her safe place and had settled into the house. She will see the vet for a more extensive exam on Monday and possible surgery to remove foxtails on Tuesday.

6/8/29 MONDAY PUPDATE: Dr card just called and said they even pulled foxtails out of Winnies mouth.   One stuck in her tonsil and one wedged behind her molar.  She took hundreds more out of her body and will probably have to do this again.  Also she may lose her left eye.  It appears something poked a hole in it and it is scarred and might be too damaged to save. The dog bites were vicious. She is on heavy antibiotics to prevent infection and we are keeping up the pain meds until she heals up more.

6/13/20 PUPDATE: Winnie will have to have her eye removed on Tues. It is in terrible condition and not getting any better with treatment. Dr Card wanted to wait because Winnie was so anemic it wasn’t safe. She will have more foxtails removed at that time. She is still oozing from all her sores and injuries. Her poor chest is a mess still. She  is healing but slowly. She didn’t have any reserves in her body to fight off the infection and pain.

6/15/20 PUPDATE: Winnie had her eye removed today along with dozens more foxtails. We expect to have more foxtails to remove over the next month or two. The injury to her eye was caused by a foxtail. It pierced her eye, got infected and she was a mess. We found it like a spear in the back of her eye. Dr Card said it was huge. Please foxtails and dogs DO NOT mix.The one in her eye would have kept going and pierced her brain and killed her eventually. The good news is she has a chance to recover now. We are so thankful for your support. Without you she would not be healing up in her foster mom’s arms.

Sanctuary Update

Looking down from the trainer

Dear Sanctuary Supporters,

Our first update on the Sanctuary work! We  got the utilities turned on and got a wonderful surprise. The previous owner told us we would need a new hot water heater and HVAC system in the trailer..nope, they all work just fine. In fact the hot water heater is almost new.  Now, we need to do some repair on the water damage from last winters storms and replace the carpet with tile. Lastly, the trailer needs to be spray washed and painted. Does anyone want to come help with those projects? The more volunteer help with this kind of work the quicker we will be up and running. We will also need some cash donations to purchase building materials and donations of building materials if you have them. Like the tile for the trailer. We can find it on sale for about $1 a square foot or if you have any old extra boxes of tile around we can use it in the trailer and the kennels.

We also need to build a shed over the well very soon to protect it. That will cost about $1500-2000 and we can use your help building it.

Before Picture of the Trailer

The next big step is the kennel permit. I have to sit down next week and pull together all the paperwork and drawing for the kennels. The design is in my head but needs to end up on a map so the Building Dept and Animal Control can see it. When the first draft of paperwork is ready I will take it to the head of Animal Control and make sure everything we need is there.  Then we need to raise $2,900 to submit the kennel application to the county building department. So far, we have raised $2,000 this week and I hope you  will help us make the whole $2900 by the end of the week so I can get this application in as fast as possible. It will take 3-6 months to process by the county depending on how well I have documented everything. I don’t want to make this process any longer than we have to by delaying because of a lack of a few hundred dollars.

One view outside the trailer

What we need this week is:
$2900 for the kennel permit application fee
$1000-1500 for a well shed
$500-1000 to fix up trailer
Handy men and women to help fix the trailer
new or used shop vac, wheel barrow, basic tool set, shovel, etc…

With great anticipation,

Tumors and dentals and vet bills! Oh my!

“There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home.” I’m sure if our doggies had ruby slippers they’d all click there heels and wish for a home themselves. But for most of them, there is a bit of a journey to get to their forever homes that often involves vet visits, procedures, and a bit of recovery time in a foster home. Lately it seems like more and more of our dogs are having to go down this road and our vet bills are becoming more daunting than the dark forests of Oz.

Sanctuary Girl, Betty

We love what we do and we love saving all of these medical needs dogs. Every dog that we rescue has a special place in our hearts, but it really is the tough cases the usually touch us all the most. We are so blessed to have such generous donors and friends that help us continue our mission of saving lives one dog at a time. We are also very lucky to have credit to help cover the mounting vet costs when the donations just aren’t enough. Unfortunately we are maxed out right now and the bills just keep coming in. Just in the month of March, we had $4,570 in vet bills for 6 dogs! (Duncan-FHO surgery, dental $1176.94 / Betty spay, mammary tumor removals, and dental…Macy dental and mass removal $1200.94 / Mia ear and skin infections $1701.01 / Felicia-diabetes exam and blood test $300.59 / Marcus euthanisia and creamation $191.25) We owe thousands of dollars on our credit accounts for dogs currently in our sanctuary program, who have long since been adopted, and who have even crossed the rainbow bridge.

So we plea with our friends and supporters once more. Please please help us continue the tireless work that we do to give the best quality of life to every dog that comes to our rescue. Every dollar adds up and no donation is too small. Does your company offer a donation matching program? Add us to that even. We truly are so very grateful for each and every single donation received. Every dollar we get goes directly back to our dogs for their daily care, medical needs, transport, and boarding. We are 100% volunteer run and no volunteer takes a salary for the jobs we do. We help, love, and care for these dogs on our own time, often our own dime, and solely out of the kindness of our hearts.

Keep spreading the love and sharing the Second Chance Cocker Rescue spirit far and wide. Let’s show as many dogs as we can that there really is no place like a loving home! Thank you so much for your support and donations.

Soon She Will Be Bright As A New Penny

A friend showed up unexpectedly with a family in tow at 9:30 pm the other night! Janice was asked to look at their dog’s skin. They took her to a vet who wasn’t able to help. They stated that they adopted her about 2 months ago from Woods Humane Society where she was just fine. Currently, half of her fur is missing,  and she has bloody rips in her skin where she is aggressively scratching her wounded skin. She looks miserable! We took Penny into our rescue, and transported her to our vet the next day, who treated her for a bacterial infection caused by allergies. Now she is on antibiotics, medicated shampoo and allergy meds and in several weeks or months she will be as good as new. She is about 6-7 years old and needs a foster or an Adopter! Penny is very laid back and easy-going. She does well with the other foster dogs, and is great with the bunny. Penny is not a barker. We are working on house training, and she is learning to use the doggy door. Donations towards Penny’s medical bills are very much appreciated!

Charlotte is Barking, Thank You

We received an urgent plea for this temporarily sad, but sweet female, black and white Cocker at the charlotte-before2high kill SEAACA shelter in Downey, CA.

She was dumped there, by her owners at age 12, because they said she is “going blind.” She was a nasty mess, with a coat drier than straw and skin underneath, that felt like sandpaper.  They must have been feeding her a very low grade food and then thrown the bag outside, for her to eat.  She is overweight from the bad food.  She was likely used as a breeder dog, her entire life.  Her nipples are huge and mal-formed. This sweet baby has been neglected for a long, long time.

Given her appearance, she was being passed on by potential adopters, and most likely soon to be euthanized.

Second Chance Cocker Rescue jumped in, and she took her “freedom ride” a few days ago!

Look at this lovely girl now! We’ve named her Charlotte. After a little cleanup, she has nothing but smiles now.

She is very sweet, quiet, mellow and barely moves around. She is a large girl, and needless to say, she is now on a diet!  She has a little snotty nose right now, so her spaying is still a couple of weeks off.  She has stinky breath and will desperately need dental work after she is spayed.

charlotte-after1We shaved her down and as you can see, she looks gorgeous! Sometimes, it doesn’t take much, to bring a beauty from rags to riches. Her bottom eyelids just droop a bit, so she has a little bit of the Elvis hound dog look to her, but she does not have cherry eyes.

Charlotte, and all of our fur babies are so grateful for a second chance. Please help us to keep rescuing, rehoming and rehabilitating.

Sweet Lucy is getting a Second Chance

IMG_0436Second Chance Cocker Rescue makes a promise to all the dogs we rescue. They will ALWAYS be taken care of.

Lucy was adopted out 5 years ago to a gentleman in Nevada. He passed away, and Lucy was returned to us at 10 yrs old because we always take our dogs back.

She has several medical problems we need to deal with. She has a torn ACL that we are treating with acupuncture and a brace, her liver enzymes are high and she has bladder stones. We are making sure she has good care, but needIMG_0451 help paying for her vet bills. Any help you can give is so appreciated!

Lucy is being fostered, and her foster dad Gil has decided she will stay with him as a Sanctuary girl. He sent us these photos. Look how happy she is!

Second Chance Cocker Rescue wants to thank Gil and all our other foster families, forever families and donors. It takes a village!

Carlton, A Little Slice of Heaven

Carlton is a little slice of heaven! Everyone who meets him is instantly smitten as he IMG_9139has this beautiful air of sweetness about him. This is what his foster mom says about Carlton: “He is housebroken, curious, and not hindered by his blindness in the least! He can hear very well and already knows and responds to his name. Recently I have discovered that he LOVES to hug AND give kisses! When I sit on the floor with him, he comes toddling over and put his legs up on my shoulders, literally hugging me and then starts licking my ear! It is the sweetest thing!

He is also starting to act frisky IMG_9140and silly. He just found his voice and will now bark a little when the other dogs bark. He is very much an explorer. One night I woke up and went out to the kitchen to find him sleeping on my couch! He had figured out how to get up there and made himself right at home in the corner and was peacefully slumbering away. He gets along fabulously with all three of my other gentle Cockers (but at the same time will not tolerate it when they try to steal his food!)”

Carlton is ready to be adopted and is in foster, in Pasadena, CA. You can find our adoption application on our website SecondChanceCockerRescue.org if you would like to meet him. We are pretty confident, that once you meet him, he will be taking YOU home.

As a senior, Carlton is eligible for our Sanctuary Program, where we pay his medical bills. For us to manage and fund our senior Sanctuary Program, we rely entirely upon donations. Your generous donations, help to take care of these precious babies. Any assistance from you, helps to save lives and spread the happiness that comes with the love of a grateful dog.
