Mr. Magoo Is Famous Too

Magoo 2One of our favorite foster moms is Twilight Saga star, Marlane Barnes.  Recently she was the focus of an article on her rescue work where she mentions  our own sweet Mr Magoo.  Marlane also posted an article entitled “How to Get a Rescue Dog Adopted: Mr. Magoo’s Online Profile” at ProjectNoses.org. her website  chronicling the star’s time with the companion dogs she has fostered and showcasing, you guessed it, Mr Magoo!

Mr Magoo is a sweet little man with lots of energy who loves belly rubs and back scratches. Being blind and mostly deaf doesn’t slow him down at all! He can hear just enough to make a chew toy squeak and he loves it! If he picks up a new scent on the ground he is determined to find out what it is! He would probably do well with kids because he doesn’t mind getting scooted around or shooed from your snack. He is independent during the day but would love to sleep near you at night. Because of his blindness/determination to track scents, cats are not the best companions, but he seems to like other dogs. He’s not crazy about being crated, but he does well on his own in a room where he can still explore.

Mr Magoo is 10 years old and is eligible for our sanctuary program where we pay for all his medical expenses.

It is Raining Seniors

We have senior dogs coming out our ears! We have so many fabulous babies waiting for foster homes and Sanctuary homes we just had to let you know. It is our fault for saying yes every time someone called with a sad story but who could say no to these sweet faces? These babies desperately need foster homes. Can you help? Contact us at 805 687 4674 or fill out an application and we will call you right away. In order we have Bim and Coal, Jasper, Jr, Spencer and Katie, Maxi, Prince, Amber….they are all so sweet and deserve to spend the rest of their days in a loving home. For some of these babies it will be the only time they be loved and properly taken care of. Please, don’t make them wait any longer!

Katie and Spencer

Katie and Spencer’s mom died and they ended up at the Orange County Shelter. Two seniors, grossly over weight and in terrible condition. How could we say no?  Carolyn got them in and her was her first report on Katie:

katie before“My goodness….this poor old girl has really been neglected.  Nails were horrible and two of them had curled back into her pads which no doubt contributed to her reluctance to walk…..ears were so gunky it was like scraping spoonfuls of dirt out, her skin is very dry and flaky, and shaving her was like trying to shave fur off a bowl of jello!  She is quite overweight, to the point where her little nub tail is actually buried in fat…..her eyes are just enormous with glaucoma pressure.  I am not sure if she will even be a candidate for chemical ablation because they might have ‘gone too far’ for it….more than likely we are looking at eye removal now.  Will find out at the vet tomorrow morning. But, she is cleaned up now 🙂  She is very sweet and good natured…just needs a diet and exercise and fix those eyes! This is the before picture”
Kaatie 2Katie’s after picture before her surgery. They both went to the vet yesterday and we got an update. “Quick update…..went to the vet today, obviously grossly overweight.  Both have ear infections, no big surprise.  Katie’s eyes are bad which we knew.  I have now scheduled her for surgery on Wednesday to have them both removed.  Dr. Card feels they are too damaged for chemical ablation to work like it should, so out they come.

2014 Annual Letter To Our Supporters

DorieThis year, with your unfailing support, we rescued over 140 dogs and supported 34 dogs in loving sanctuary homes. We created our new “Team Lead” positions which allow us to expand into new geographical areas covering the state of California more completely than ever. We welcomed four new team leads into our organization and they are proudly leading SCCR rescue efforts in their locations.  They have helped us rescue dogs from hopeless situations giving them not just hope but medical attention, loving families and a promise that we will always be there if they need us.

IMAG0199Buddy and Bo’s mom passed away when on vacation leaving them at the pet sitters with no instructions on what to do with them so the sitter took them to a shelter in Sacramento. Even though Buddy is a senior with health problems and Bo is snippy with strangers we found them a home with two mom’s who think they are absolutely perfect. Tiny was “rescued” by an independent rescuer who abandoned her in a foster home after pulling her from a shelter in Los Angeles. We stepped in, got her medical care, surgery and found her a sanctuary home where we will make sure she is properly cared for, for the rest of her life. That is what real rescue is and we won’t settle for anything less

AnnieTalia was hit by a car and sitting in a Bakersfield shelter with a shattered pelvis when we found her. With your support we were able to pay for the $4,000 surgery, nurse her through her recovery and find her a home where she is now the reigning princess. Annie was pulled from the Stockton shelter. At 3 years old she was already completely blind from cataracts. We asked you to help us give her sight back and you answered without hesitation. One surgery and six weeks recovery later her dad tells us “It’s like a whole new world opened for her.”

Gilly-4We are looking forward to this coming year, here at SCCR. We will be launching our new HALO Cocker Spaniel Registry in February. It will offer Cocker Spaniel owners another option to ensure their babies are safe when they are gone.

We will continue to grow without sacrificing the quality of work we do and we are proud to have you with us every step. We thank you for being an important part of Second Chance and helping us save lives,

It Is A Good Thing He Has Us!

ColtonColton is a dear sweet boy with weak back legs that are cow hocked. The Gene Fairies were not very kind to Colton when he was born. At the tender age of 4-5 he already has bad knees from arthritis and the cataracts he had when we rescued him a few months ago went from just starting to full blown already. Good thing he has us!

There isn’t much we can do about those knees but we have made an appointment with our eye specialist, Dr. Schmidt in Arroyo Grande. We have our fingers crossed that he will be a good candidate for cataract surgery.

The Old Folks….

Buddy, Jezebel,, Shadow and seven other new oldsters were welcomed into our Sanctuary program this year. This program is near and dear to our hearts as these oldsters are so in need, so loving and so deserving of the life we can offer them.  Some of them come from owners who have passed away, some were left at the shelter by their families who didn’t want them anymore.  All of them are confused, sad and hurting when they come to us.  We place them into permanent foster homes where they are treated as treasured members of the family. They are pampered and get the best medical care we can find.

We treasure our foster families as much as we do our seniors. They are very special people. They welcome into their homes and hearts senior dogs they they know they will only have for a few short months or years. Not everyone can do this but these special people know what a tremendous gift this is to these dogs. For some it is the only time in the dog’s life they have been loved and cared for.

We have approximately 30-35 senior dogs in our Sanctuary program at any one time. We provide for all of their medical care like Chloe who had a tumor removed from her ear earlier this year and Henri who is having reoccurring eye issues.

What A Day!

IMG_5665--getting donations for SCCRWow, what a year for our Annual Cocker Reunion Picnic’s….we had over 80 SCCR cockers come to both our picnics this year! The Santa Barbara picnic was Saturday and boy did we have a great time. We got to visit with old friends and new ones. Ate amazing food, (we will post the tortellini recipe soon, as requested by so many of you), played on the beach, visited with our fabulous vets Dr. Fisher and Dr. Kristin from Carpinteria Veterinary Hospital, got a grooming demo,got a henna by Felecia and shopped for cool cocker stuff.

IMG_5661--lunchThe Spring Raffle brought in enough to pay for Lulu’s surgery and part of Romeo’s too! Two of our raffle winners, Rushelle Vasak and Tim Morrow donated their winnings back to the dogs. You guys Rock!

Romeo was the hit of the day as he worked the crowd as only a puppy can do. He raised over $1000 towards his surgery. Good job Romeo! You can see all  our pictures on our Facebook page.

Romeo Is A Real Heartbreaker

RomeoRomeo was only 12 weeks old when his family called us and said they wanted to find him a new home because he was blind. He had juvenile cataracts and was having trouble adjusting. When we met Romeo he was afraid to come out of the crate and he flinched when anyone got too close. He had nightmares when he was sleeping where he cried and whimpered.

Romeo 4The first thing we did was make an appointment with our eye specialist in Arroyo Grande. We have to wait until the 25th to see her but in the mean time we started working on his self confidence and training him to deal with the world as a blind boy. He has learned to come when called, to navigate strange places and meet new people. He has learned to deal with stairs, door ways and walking on and off leash. He now loves to go for off leash beach walks, meeting new dogs and people. The nightmares have subsided and now he loves to tease the other foster dogs in the house.

We can’t wait to schedule his surgery so he can see again but until then he will be a well adjusted boy and will enjoy his puppy months instead of living in fear of the black world around him.

An Unlikely Pair

Bella Maria & RoscoeBella Maria is an older woman who has fallen for a younger man. She and Roscoe lost their human family when they were taken to the shelter but they vowed not to be separated and managed to convince the shelter staff to beg us to take them both. They are adorable together. They sleep together, they check in with one another all the time and they share food bowls.

0704130836dBella Maria is about 8-10 yrs old and a purebred Cocker girl while Roscoe is only 3 yrs old and a Maltese /Shih tzu who looks just like a Muppet and snorts when he is excited. She is a sweet gentle soul and he is silly and full of himself.  Roscoe has cataracts but she takes care of him and he watches out for her. When they came in we could tell no one took very good care of them for a long time. Bella’s nails were grown into the pads of her feet, several of her teeth were abscessed and their fur was matted and filthy. But as long as they were together they were happy.

0704130836bWe got them both cleaned up and gave Bella Marie a dental and pedicure. Now Bella Marie and Roscoe desperately need a foster home while they are waiting for their forever family to find them. Can you help?
