Henry Needs Help

Henry 2 croppedSecond Chance Cocker Rescue got a call from a family member about this sweet boy named Henry who was being abused by another family member. She pulled him out of the house and dropped him off with an SCCR rescuer/foster mom yesterday. We will have to evaluate him carefully to make sure his experience hasn’t created any aggression issues, but so far he is a sweetheart. This is where his foster mom found him when she returned home; on the kitchen counter. Henry wideHe really made himself at home!

We will take care of Henry now and the family can deal with their problems without worrying about Henry. Sometimes life happens. We can’t fix everyone’s problems but we can help the Cockers who need us.

Henry also has some digestive issues and possible thyroid problem that we will have to get under control before he can go to a forever home, but with a lot of TLC we are hoping he will feel better and be a wonderful family member.

Vetting and healing this sweet soul are needed. All donations, large or small are much appreciated!

Harley’s Journey to His Forever Home With SCCR

DSC_0349 copyI met Harley 9 years ago when I was looking to rescue another Cocker.  He was friendly, and got along with my other Cocker Spaniel immediately.  As I left with Harley, I promised him a forever home.  He seemed to be doing well, and then within a short time significant behavior issues began to surface. I immediately sought help from a variety of groups, and while only a few would help, their techniques were not effective. After a time, I made the heart wrenching decision that I was not equipped to handle Harley’s issues related to abuse during his formative puppyhood.  I was fortunate in that during many calls seeking help, a rescue in another state suggested calling Elizabeth and Second Chance Cocker Rescue.  DSCN0322 copy 2I called and Elizabeth immediately came to my rescue, and eventually provided Harley with his forever SCCR sanctuary home.  Harley died a little over a year ago having lived a full and happy life in his loving SCCR sanctuary home.  I have supported SCCR for all these years because of their life-saving work and their dedication and love of Cocker Spaniels.

What A Story He Could Tell

HarrySCCR1Harry came from a really bad section of LA. We don’t know the details but he was in bad shape when we got him. His legs were so weak he could not stand up by himself. He was emaciated and had big patches of fur missing. We think he was crated for a long time in a crate that was too small for him to stand up in. When we go him his muscles had atrophied and he had developed arthritis in his back legs.

We put Harry on a joint and muscle supplement and slowly started exercising him until he could stand and walk but he was so wobbly he would tip right over. We kept up the physical therapy and now, several months later he has muscle tone and can walk normally. He is still on an anti-inflammatory twice a day for the arthritis but he feels great.

HarrySCCR2You would think his experience would effect him and the way he looks at the world but not this boy. He is a sweet gentle soul. He loves to meet and greet people and play fetch. Harry is about 8 years old and is ready for adoption. If you are interested in meeting him you can fill out an application on our website.

Hope

HopeShannon from Idaho called us about a three yr old girl she had seen on line in the Downey shelter. Shannon wanted her to adopt her but need help since she was so far away. Shannon told us this girl just had a litter and all the puppies died and she was sick too but the shelter didn’t know exactly what was wrong. We said we would commit to pulling her if Shannon would go through our normal adoption process.

When we sent, Meg, our transporter to pick Hope Meg called us immediately and said Hope was so weak she could not walk and had to be wheeled out of the shelter in a wagon. She couldn’t even lift her head. We phoned the vet to be ready took her straight there. When Dr Card called with our first update she said Hope had a horrible case of fleas and lice and she was so anemic she needed a blood transfusion immediately or she would die. Her core temp was down to 91 degrees and she was very close to dying.  Dr Card had already sent for the dog who will be donating and he was on his way to the clinic as we spoke.

This severe anemia turned out to be a severe case of flea infestation, they were that bad. Dr Card confirmed that is what is most likely to have killed Hope’s puppies. When we took blood for a blood test to see if anything else was wrong her blood was so watery and diluted the machine did not recognize it as blood. They had add in a plasma transfusion too. After the transfusions her blood cell counts started to come up. The first one was 5 and as the vet tech said, anything under 8 is not consistent with life.

When Hope came in she was too weak to lift her head or scratch at a flea. After her transfusions she was picking her head up and her nub was wagging.  Krista and Amy stayed late with her that first night trying to shave off her moldy dread locks because they were worried she might have maggots underneath everything.

When the staff got in the next day Hope was standing on her own and she had stolen the staff’s hearts with her brave determination and fight. It was amazing that she was even alive. That morning her PCV count had gone up to 20.

Even though they had given her a Capstar to kill the fleas when she came in, they had to shave her, bathe her and give her another Capstar before all the fleas were dead.

We want to thank Dr. Amy Card for being such an awesome vet, Nicole (front desk) and Krista ( RVT), Amy’s sister for bringing in her personal dog for the blood transfusion, and her mom for running down to CVS Emergency Room to get Plasma for Hope. They ALL played a part in saving Hope’s life. They all stayed late last night to get the moldy dreak-locks off Hope and gave her a bath….and to make sure she didn’t have a bad reaction to the transfusion, etc. As Dr. Card put it…”we are in this with you” and that is one of the many reasons we followed her to her new practice. We accept nothing less than the best from our vets and Dr Card has delivered every time! The name of the practice is Sycamore Creek Animal Hospital and we LOVE them.

Hope will be ready to be spayed in 2-4 weeks then Shannon and her family can take her home.

She Has A Sweet Little Wobble When She Walks

HOLLY - ID#A1363027When we saw this sweet baby at the OC shelter we decided to pull her. Holly is a mix but at only 6 months old what a darling. When we got her medical records we where shocked. She had been hit by a car and suffered severe head trauma and has a genetic problem with her hips that gives her a sweet little wobble when she walks. The shelter took care of the surgery on her hips and now she needs physical therapy to help her balance when she walks due to the head trauma. What a lot to go though at such a young age. We were so glad she caught our eye.

Holly, is currently in Romoland and could use a foster home with a lot of TLC.

Our Valentine!

A1372305-OCAfter we decided we just had to pull this sweet girl from the OC shelter we sent her to Carolyn’s right away for evaluation and a vet check. Here was Carolyn’s report: “This girl is a wreck….does appear to be blind, ears are nasty and her coat is so matted and disgusting that there is no chance a human has even touched this girl for month.  She has got a layer of grease on her. Can’t pick her up because she is tender in the tummy area and didn’t want to hurt her back …underneath all that nasty coat is a gorgeous, champagne colored girl 🙂

She was very tender with right front paw which may have been because her dew claw had grown around and was embedded back into the pad….freaking oowie for her.

Valentine 3She was very good for her haircut….now the vet can see  what is going on with her. You couldn’t see anything with that huge matted greasy coat.  She walks fine, no limping or anything ….but she really doesn’t want to be picked up at all, so need to address that.  Surprisingly she is not bone skinny either….but still so hard to imagine this sweet blind girl wandering the streets.”

The vet report: Valentine has glaucoma and cataracts and is completely blind. She has a massive bruise on her stomach and several mammary tumors that must be removed. Diagnostics showed nothing wrong with her stomach and back so her tender areas must have been from a soft tissue injury.

As soon as she has healed up from her surgeries, we have a sanctuary home waiting for her with Brittany in Fresno where she will get a lot of well deserved TLC.

The “Devore Seven”

Devore puppy mill dogs 5A puppy mill was raided and Devore shelter took in 190 dogs yesterday.. There are 7 cockers! There are three sweet senior girls who have been breed to death and four adorable 8-12 month old babies. We are going to go in and pull all 7 cockers the day they become available. We will need $200 per dog for boarding until we can get them into foster and the three senior girls are going to need some work.  Their availablity date is currently 2/16 but is dependent on their court case with the breeder they were confiscated from. We hope it does not push out too much. These kids need to get into foster homes asap! Please help us make sure none get left behind.

Three In a Bush

3 puppiesThree adorable puppies were dumped in a woman’s front yard. When she came home there they were hiding under a bush. She called us and we were delighted to help. We are working on finding someone to help transport them down from the Chico area but we were able to find not only some great foster homes but three adopters are all lined up already!

These three boys are beautiful red and white parties with lovely green eyes. They were a bit traumatized by their experience but with a little TLC and some great homes they will soon be able to put that all behind them.

We Rescued Batman

Mr wayneMr Wayne was sitting in the San Diego Humane Society and he was a bit of a train wreck. Bad skin, one bad eye, missing the other and bad ears they realized he didn’t have much of a chance to get adopted so they called us. Well, train wrecks are our specialty, besides who could resist that coloring. Wow, what an unusual boy. We couldn’t wait to meet him and he was as sweet and odd looking as his first picture. We shaved him down, renamed him Batman and got him off to the vet to start on meds. It will take a week or two of Carolyn’s TLC but he will be ready for his new home soon.

She Emerged Like A Butterfly

Zooey beforeZooey was sitting in the Orange County shelter. She was a sight to behold. Big patches of hair missing, a huge cherry eye, terrible skin and butter ball fat. We were not surprised that no one seemed interested in adopting her. She looked awful. But after so many years of doing cocker rescue we could see past all that and saw a miserable but adorable little girl.

ZooeyWe pulled her, shaved her down and whisked her off to the vet. She didn’t look much better, her skin was red and crusty, her bald patches were more obvious. Once we put her on the meds for a slow thyroid and antibiotics for the secondary skin infections she started to perk up in a couple of days. When she was ready we took her in for surgery on that eye.

Zooey (2)After a few weeks then a few more her hair grew in and she started to slim down a bit and a beautiful buff girl emerged like a butterfly. Now we had the girl we knew was under all that mess. Wow, what a knock out she is too.

Not long after she was healthy again we introduced her to Antonio, her new dad. They are a perfect match. He knows all about girls with sensitive skin and thyroid problems and will take nothing but the best of care of Zooey for the rest of her life.
