Saving a Sweet, Bonded Pair

robinsccrSometimes, life is full of surprises. That’s what happened last week when Second Chance Cocker Rescue heard about a sweet, male dog named Robin at the Baldwin Park Shelter in Southern California. We went in to pull Robin, and found out he had a mate with him. A sweet, petite girl named Princess. While we are at our capacity with many medical needs dogs, we couldn’t separate these two sweethearts! They took their freedom ride together! They both barked, “hooray!”

Robin is about 11 years old, Princess is about 9. They were surrendered together. Robin is blind, and his owners dumped him because they didn’t want an old, blind dog anymore. We don’t know the story behind Princess being dumped, but looking at her, she has not been well taken care of. We were told they both lived their lives as outdoor dogs.

Robin is as sweet as can be! He loves people princess-sccr1and other dogs. He adores his mate Princess so much, when she walks away from him he cries! Robin has infected ears and was covered with flea dirt when we got him. He has been bathed and is much more comfortable. He is a little guy, around 17 pounds.

Princess also has a very sweet disposition. She is very loving and good with dogs and people too. She is also about 17 pounds.
Both will be getting full vet care this week. Robin needs his eyes checked and an overall on his health. Princess has a cherry eye and an open mammary tumor. Both will be taken care of ASAP. Unfortunately, female dogs who are not spayed often get these mammary tumors. Paws crossed she will have a clean bill of health soon. Both need to be spayed/neutered too.

Freckley, A Very Special Girl

Sweet Freckley, suffered a tragic accident, and Second Chance Cocker Rescue came to her rescue! freckley-1She damaged a disk and can’t currently walk.

The vet believes she will walk again, with rehab and our usual brand of TLC. The SFSPCA is sending her home with a stroller, which she loves to go for walks in. The vet also removed a cancerous tumor on her nose and gave her a skin graft to cover the spot, so the other dogs wouldn’t make fun of her. What a trooper she is!

SFSPCA performed a CT on Freckley. Right now, the update, is that she is making improvements with walking and rest. The good news is, as of last week, Freckley was sitting up on her own! The neurologist says no PT for the time being, just rest. image001-3

This is great news and will certainly make it a lot easier to find a foster and eventually, Freckley’s forever family.

As with all of our precious babies, we will do anything possible, to get them healthy, happy and give them the best lives possible.

As always, any  donations toward Freckley’s medical expenses are much appreciated!

Charlotte is Barking, Thank You

We received an urgent plea for this temporarily sad, but sweet female, black and white Cocker at the charlotte-before2high kill SEAACA shelter in Downey, CA.

She was dumped there, by her owners at age 12, because they said she is “going blind.” She was a nasty mess, with a coat drier than straw and skin underneath, that felt like sandpaper.  They must have been feeding her a very low grade food and then thrown the bag outside, for her to eat.  She is overweight from the bad food.  She was likely used as a breeder dog, her entire life.  Her nipples are huge and mal-formed. This sweet baby has been neglected for a long, long time.

Given her appearance, she was being passed on by potential adopters, and most likely soon to be euthanized.

Second Chance Cocker Rescue jumped in, and she took her “freedom ride” a few days ago!

Look at this lovely girl now! We’ve named her Charlotte. After a little cleanup, she has nothing but smiles now.

She is very sweet, quiet, mellow and barely moves around. She is a large girl, and needless to say, she is now on a diet!  She has a little snotty nose right now, so her spaying is still a couple of weeks off.  She has stinky breath and will desperately need dental work after she is spayed.

charlotte-after1We shaved her down and as you can see, she looks gorgeous! Sometimes, it doesn’t take much, to bring a beauty from rags to riches. Her bottom eyelids just droop a bit, so she has a little bit of the Elvis hound dog look to her, but she does not have cherry eyes.

Charlotte, and all of our fur babies are so grateful for a second chance. Please help us to keep rescuing, rehoming and rehabilitating.

Our Newest Bed & Biscuit Guest

june-2We were contacted by a young woman who was desperately searching for a safe place for her beloved pet. She knew that sweet June would not last long in a shelter, because June has never known anything but the loving care of her family. They had one week to find a safe place, and they reached out to Second Chance Cocker Rescue for help.

Meet the newest guest in our Bed & Biscuit program! We welcomed sweet little June this week, and what a wonderful addition she is. June is 11 years young, and is very healthy for her age. She is having some ear issues and will need a complete physical in order to give her proper care.
june-1June needs some help with her medical costs. Could you please find it in your heart to donate on behalf of Sweet June?

The Bed & Biscuit is a resort style residence that allows us to house up to ten additional senior Cockers at private kennel in Riverside County. There are comfy couches to nap on, dog beds all over the floor, a huge play area with trees to hangout in during the day. The inside walls of the building have been painted to look like a living room so the dog will feel as much at home as possible. These seniors are available for a Sanctuary home, but can stay here forever if they don’t get chosen by a family.  The cost to house, feed and keep these dogs is $1250 a month. Medical care is extra and averages $800 per senior per year. We have a extra soft spot for senior Cocker Spaniels and would like to invite you to join us supporting this project!

Sweet Lucy is getting a Second Chance

IMG_0436Second Chance Cocker Rescue makes a promise to all the dogs we rescue. They will ALWAYS be taken care of.

Lucy was adopted out 5 years ago to a gentleman in Nevada. He passed away, and Lucy was returned to us at 10 yrs old because we always take our dogs back.

She has several medical problems we need to deal with. She has a torn ACL that we are treating with acupuncture and a brace, her liver enzymes are high and she has bladder stones. We are making sure she has good care, but needIMG_0451 help paying for her vet bills. Any help you can give is so appreciated!

Lucy is being fostered, and her foster dad Gil has decided she will stay with him as a Sanctuary girl. He sent us these photos. Look how happy she is!

Second Chance Cocker Rescue wants to thank Gil and all our other foster families, forever families and donors. It takes a village!

Carlton, A Little Slice of Heaven

Carlton is a little slice of heaven! Everyone who meets him is instantly smitten as he IMG_9139has this beautiful air of sweetness about him. This is what his foster mom says about Carlton: “He is housebroken, curious, and not hindered by his blindness in the least! He can hear very well and already knows and responds to his name. Recently I have discovered that he LOVES to hug AND give kisses! When I sit on the floor with him, he comes toddling over and put his legs up on my shoulders, literally hugging me and then starts licking my ear! It is the sweetest thing!

He is also starting to act frisky IMG_9140and silly. He just found his voice and will now bark a little when the other dogs bark. He is very much an explorer. One night I woke up and went out to the kitchen to find him sleeping on my couch! He had figured out how to get up there and made himself right at home in the corner and was peacefully slumbering away. He gets along fabulously with all three of my other gentle Cockers (but at the same time will not tolerate it when they try to steal his food!)”

Carlton is ready to be adopted and is in foster, in Pasadena, CA. You can find our adoption application on our website SecondChanceCockerRescue.org if you would like to meet him. We are pretty confident, that once you meet him, he will be taking YOU home.

As a senior, Carlton is eligible for our Sanctuary Program, where we pay his medical bills. For us to manage and fund our senior Sanctuary Program, we rely entirely upon donations. Your generous donations, help to take care of these precious babies. Any assistance from you, helps to save lives and spread the happiness that comes with the love of a grateful dog.

One of the Most Neglected We’ve Seen

image006This sweet baby, made everyone cry, when she came into the shelter.

She was living with a 72 year old woman in a trailer, without running water or electricity. The woman surrendered her to the San Jacinto Valley Animal Campus…Thank goodness.

At first glance, you might think that she is a Komondor, Puli or some kind of a sad/messy Old English Sheepdog. Once our vet staff got to work on this sweet girl, shaving her down, pulling out bad teeth (7 in total), cutting her nails (which were about 2-3 inches long and trapped under all those mats), there was a beautiful Cocker Spaniel. We didn’t know what was under all that mess for quite awhile, but once the real dog was excavated, this beauty was so happy to be able to see and interact with people. The woman whom she lived with, stated that she has never had her groomed. EVER… So this kind of existence, was all this girl ever knew.
image005_ContrastThe vet assessed her at around 5 years old and spayed already. She weighs about 26lbs. She currently has an ear infection that is being treated and an abcess on her left dorsal lumbar area, which was clipped, cleaned, flushed and stapled.

Bethany, at San Jacinto Valley, contacted us, in hopes that we could take her. We haven’t pulled her yet, but are hoping to do so soon. One of our volunteers, thinks “Maizy” is a good name for her. We want this sweet beauty to know only happiness and love from now on.

Can you please help make this dream come true for Maizy?

Cricket is Chirping with Gratitude

Cricket2Meet Cricket. This adorable and gorgeous girl was found wandering the streets and was picked up, by good samaritans. They saw mammary glands hanging down and thought she might be pregnant. Thoughtfully, they took her to a vet immediately, and learned that she is NOT pregnant. Cricket does have a host of health issues, including a mammary infection.  We are going to have her spayed next week, and take care of all of her medical needs. She was not microchipped and signs were placed around the area and social media was used to see if anyone claimed her. So far, no one has come forward.

We had her groomed and as you can see, she looks stunning! The vet, estimates her to be about 5 years old. Cricket1She is very sweet and mellow and gets along well with everyone.

This beauty will find a new home, in no time. However, in the meantime, anything that you can donate, to help with this sweet girl’s medical expenses is greatly appreciated!

Rocco is Safe and Sound

This poor baby, Rocco, was dumped at the shelter – by his family, at the ripe age of 14 years. After receiving all of the amazing benefits of a beautiful and loving pet, this was how they returned the favor. The condition he was in, clearly told the story of how poorly Roccothey cared for him over his life. He had an untreated injury to his eye, that if treated when it happened, would have saved the eye. Instead, he has been in agony for weeks and will now lose his eye. His teeth are beyond bad. Many of them have abscesses and are rotten. He has two terrible infections in both ears. You would think that would be more than most dogs can deal with, but he was also covered in tar, on one side.

Poor baby! He has been in pain for so long, he won’t know what to do when it stops. But we do know, that when we are finished taking care of him, he will be one good looking and happy boy. Rocco is going to the vet first thing this week, and we are going to see a very big bill on this little man.

Any help that we can get, we appreciate so much! Rocco does too, and he will be wagging his tail soon, thanks to your help.
