Gracie Hope’s Three Christmas Angels
Sitting in the Hesperia Animal Shelter, eight years old and with health problems, little Gracie Hope didn’t have much hope. The holidays were here and her family was home celebrating while she sat in the cold shelter kennel where they had left her.
We were contacted to see if we could help but the timing was bad. We had two other girls due in with severe health problems and no open foster homes. However, two of our volunteers and a woman up north really wanted to make Gracie Hope’s rescue possible so they did. Marcia promised to pay for all her medical bills (over $850) and give her a fabulous forever home if we would rescue this little soul. Debbie offered to foster her until she was recovered from any surgery she would need and Carolyn helped with transportation and pulling her.
Gracie Hope came to us matted and stinky. She had abscessed teeth, large mammary tumors and needed to be spayed. This girl has had a very hard life. We couldn’t wait to get her healthy and into a new home where she would be showered with all the love this little princess could soak in.
After a short recovery and a great stay with Debbie and all her cocker foster sisters Gracie Hope- left yesterday to meet her third Christmas Angel and new forever mom, Marcia just in time to spend Christmas in her new home.
An update on Gracie’s Hope:

Merry Christmas to you too! …Gracie is everything you said she was. I have ..held her for three days straight in my arms like she was a new born baby and stroked her head and back. She has decided …I am the cat’s meow. In fact, she has not wanted to leave my sight
…That girl can run. and she has a beautiful stride. She is like a show dog when she stands in a certain stretched out position.
She is a honey. I see she is more and more comfortable so her princess attitude is now coming to the fore. She doesn’t do windows. She dines at 7 and won’t associate with any bad riff raff. I swear it is a Cocker trait. I have not explained to her she does not reside in the Lafayette neighborhood but only with the middle class in Pleasant Hill. I hope she won’t be too disappointed when she learns she is not with the upper crust. neighborhood of Lafayette which is across the street.
…I have no doubt we are a match. I just want to keep her healthy and happy… Thanks, Carolyn for rescuing her for me. You went above and beyond your duty and Gracie has a home now…thanks to you…

Trigger’s Forever day

The Old Folks….
Buddy, Jezebel,, Shadow and seven other new oldsters were welcomed into our Sanctuary program this year. This program is near and dear to our hearts as these oldsters are so in need, so loving and so deserving of the life we can offer them. Some of them come from owners who have passed away, some were left at the shelter by their families who didn’t want them anymore. All of them are confused, sad and hurting when they come to us. We place them into permanent foster homes where they are treated as treasured members of the family. They are pampered and get the best medical care we can find.
We treasure our foster families as much as we do our seniors. They are very special people. They welcome into their homes and hearts senior dogs they they know they will only have for a few short months or years. Not everyone can do this but these special people know what a tremendous gift this is to these dogs. For some it is the only time in the dog’s life they have been loved and cared for.
We have approximately 30-35 senior dogs in our Sanctuary program at any one time. We provide for all of their medical care like Chloe who had a tumor removed from her ear earlier this year and Henri who is having reoccurring eye issues.
Sarah Jane Needs A New Leg
Sarah Jane is young, sweet and a beautiful girl. Why is it taking so long to find her the right home? She was born with half of her front left leg missing. She and her sister came into the shelter at the same time as strays. Their family never came to find them. Her sister was adopted out the first day but not Sarah Jane. She sat in the kennel all alone until they called us to rescue her.
Sarah Jane was born with this defect and she doesn’t know any different. She thinks she is just the same as everyone else. She runs like a minx and plays like a tomboy. She loves life and knows how to live it.
However, we are starting to see some problems with her good leg. It is having to take far more pressure than it should and we are concerned Sarah Jane will have some long term problems with it. Since it is all she has up there we needed to make sure stays as strong as possible.
We talked to our vets and did some research on prosthetic legs. We can have one custom made for her to wear when she is out playing. That way she can still join in all the fun but keep her legs strong and healthy. We don’t want Sarah Jane to have to spend the rest of her life on the sideines watching all the other dogs play. We want her to have the same life full of fun as all the four legged kids in her neighborhood. She deserves it!

Introducing Our HALO Cocker Registry Program
We all think about what will happen to our cockers when we pass away but only a few of us actually set up anything to make sure they are taken care of when we are gone. Why? We think it is because our options are so limited. You can find a friend or family member to take them or you can find a sanctuary some where who will take them. Sanctuaries are very few in numbers and very limited in space. Friends and family don’t always have the same love for your dogs that you do and don’t always have the means to care for them.
We would like to introduce a third option. the HALO Cocker Registration. HALO is a service that Second Chance Cocker Rescue will offer to all Cocker Spaniel owners all over the US. For a set registration fee we will offer to take in your Cocker Spaniel when you die if no family members can take the dog. There will be a fee to register and an additional amount that will be paid if the Cocker Spaniel comes to Second Chance. These dogs will be treated as rescue dogs and either be adopted into new families or placed in our Sanctuary program if they qualify. The service will include transporting the dogs to SCCR and any medical care needed.
Each owner will receive a registry package containing:
- directions
- a check list of what needs to be done
- a contract with SCCR
- a refrigerator magnet with SCCR contact info
- a dog tag
- letters to be copied and given to family members, vet, caregivers, etc.
We will be rolling out this program just before Christmas and SCCR Alumni will get a courtesy discount. Your dogs deserve the best help us make sure they get it.
Good Bye To Our Friend Maureen Murray
We are sad to say we had to say good bye to Maureen Murray, one of our best adopters and foster moms. She passed away last week and we are so sad to lose her. Maureen was a true Cocker mom, she had over 15 Cocker Spaniels over her lifetime. We know she adored her current “kids” Sweetie Pie” and “Goof” both SCCR alumni. They are coming back to us so we can find them places to live out their lives in comfort and love. We so appreciate that Maureen made sure they were taken care of before she had to leave us. Thank you Maureen for being a great Cocker mom right up until the end.

Wandering Lost And Bewildered
Darby was dumped at a park in Long Beach. He was wandering lost and bewildered when a woman picked him up and called one of our volunteers. He was in bad shape so she had him taken straight to a vet for evaluation. He cried when Steph, the nice woman who rescued him left him at the vet, poor baby. What a traumatic day for him.

Rescuing “rescued” Cocker Spaniels
This is Tiny. She was pulled from the San Bernardino shelter last month by a “rescuer” who is very prominent on Facebook. Lots of promises were made but Tiny was left stuck in a temporary foster home. The temporary foster mom is stuck with broken promises and a sick senior cocker girl. Pledges were paid and everyone believes that Tiny is safe and sound. Nothing could be further from the truth. The foster mom contacted us asking for help. SCCR has agreed to step in and rescue Tiny from her “rescuer”.
This isn’t the first time SCCR had to clean up after this particular “rescuer”. She abandoned 12 cockers at our favorite kennel last year. We found each one of them a great home and turned over their adoption fees to the kennel to help cover the thousands of dollars she owed them and never paid.
Rescuing dogs doesn’t stop at pulling dogs from the shelters. Tiny has nine tumors that need surgery and her bills will run close to $2,000 if not more and she has nowhere to live
We are going to make sure Tiiny gets the best medical care and finds a loving Sanctuary home where we will pay for her medical bills for the rest of her life. That is what real rescue is and we are so grateful for your support so we can be there for dogs like Tiny.
