Lucy was adopted 5 years ago through SCCR by her previous owner. He passed away this past
summer leaving her sad and confused. His dying wish was for her to get a “Third Chance.” SCCR always takes our dogs back, and eagerly began to look for Lucy’s new home. Within a week she found a foster family who decided to make her a permanent part of their family. Lucky Lucy! Her new Cocker siblings were a bit skeptical at first, but now they share everything.
Lucy was well loved and taken care of by her previous owner, but she did come with some medical issues. It was learned she had an unknown allergy and had developed a skin infection. She had surgery for bladder stones in the past, and has a propensity to redevelop them requiring special care. She also has had surgery for a torn ACL on one hind leg, and has ACL damage to the other leg requiring treatment.
It was decided we would try an alternative path to treat her ailments. She visited a Holistic Vet to determine what we could do for her. Her family started her off with a wholesome diet, supplements and Chinese herbs. She also required weekly medicated baths for a month to deal with the skin infection. To help stabilize her knee, she began wearing a special brace. At her last checkup, she showed great improvement and the vet decided Lucy was ready to start Prolotherapy for her arthritis and ACL. Unfortunately, it is going to be costly, and require several visits over approximately 4 months.
Lucy loves to be around people. Her new siblings told her about this great gig as a Therapy Dog. They have children read to them. They get to de-stress College students during finals and get lots of attention. They cheer up veterans and help patients in nursing homes. Her family found an organization which certifies in this field, and she just completed the Therapy Dog program. She recently interviewed to be a volunteer employee with VITAS Paw Pals to help hospice patients like her dad and siblings. Lucy is looking forward to feeling better and giving back.
Lucy is part of the SCCR Sanctuary Program, where we pay all her medical needs while her family provides for her other needs and plenty of love. Her total expenses are expected to exceed $1,500 with ongoing monthly prescription expenses of about $100. Any amount you can donate to help with Lucy’s expenses, helps us to take care of Lucy and all of our other medical and senior dogs. We can’t do it without our “pack.” Thank you!
This boy was named Shakie Butt. Yes, that’s what his loving owner named him, most likely
because that’s what he did. That’s what all Cocker cuties do. His owner had to go to the hospital and begged her neighbor to take care of her dogs until she got out, which she was supposed to do! Then she had a stroke, and died. The neighbor continued to take care of Shakie Butt since his owner died at the beginning of October, but Shakie Butt was still living at his owner’s house, and the neighbor couldn’t take him herself. The lady that died had a nephew (the only living relative) that the neighbor contacted and he told her, “open the gate and let him out.” She wouldn’t think of doing that, so she contacted Second Chance Cocker Rescue. We agreed to get him!
When we first got him, his coat was a mess. We just groomed him and wow, he is
really a looker! Underneath all that black fur, he is flecked with gray like a blue merle. He is a dapper and handsome boy. He may have some English Cocker in him due to his coloring and his size and muzzle. He is a larger size boy. The neighbor who helped him after his owner died thought he was probably 5-6 years old, but his teeth look good, so he may be younger. We will have a better idea when he sees our vet.
We changed his name to something more fitting for such a handsome fella, Wyatt. He does great with other dogs, not necessarily playing with them, but he is fine peacefully cohabitating with them. He is good with people too.
Although Wyatt is not as desperate as some of our dogs, we need help getting him
vetted and ready to be adopted. Any donation, large or small is so appreciated. Wyatt is doing a happy dance shaking his butt in thanks!
ALERT: 16 YEAR OLD COCKER FEMALE ABANDONED ON THE STREETS!
We received an urgent message asking for assistance with a senior girl, named Maxie abandoned on the streets. Two wonderful ladies made it their mission to get this poor baby urgently needed medical care. Second Chance Cocker Rescue was contacted and asked to take Maxie, and help her with her health issues. How could we say no!
Maxie has severely rotted teeth and will likely need all removed! She is also likely suffering from limited vision, and appears to be hearing impaired, from chronic ear infections as well. This severely neglected baby is the sweetest little angel! Gentle and sweet, even in her discomfort!
Maxie needs our help to live out her last days pain-free, and in a secure and loving home. Maxie will need money to assist with her many medical bills! Can you please find it in your heart to help this senior sweetheart with a generous donation? Maxie would appreciate your generosity!
Maxie will also need a foster home, or perhaps a forever home of her own when her medical needs are met! Thanks for your continued generosity! Please consider being a sponsor for Maxie! Puppy hugs from Maxie!
This poor guy was turned in by his owners last week as a “euth request.” Fortunately, the shelter did not deem him a candidate. An amazing woman got him out of the shelter, and is taking care of him. SCCR has offered to make him one of our Sanctuary Dogs.
Meet Dodger. He is a purebred, black, 14 year, adorable, sweet old guy.
Dodger needs to get some meat put back on his bones; he’s really, really skinny. The family that dumped him said he was incontinent. His left eye is completely white with a caratact. His teeth are in terrible condition. His nails are overgrown, and his ears are smelly and matted. He hasn’t been taken care of in a very long time.
Dodger will be visiting our vet to see what needs to be done.
We are able to help dogs like Dodger, who may get passed up on because of their age, thanks to our supporters. We are also able to provide medical care for these dogs for their entire lives through our Sanctuary Program. Any donations you can provide, large or small are so appreciated. Dodger is already wagging his tail with gratitude!
Just as our Los Angeles Dodgers are having a winning season, it looks like this sweet boy named Dodger will too!
Sometimes, life is full of surprises. That’s what happened last week when Second Chance Cocker Rescue heard about a sweet, male dog named Robin at the Baldwin Park Shelter in Southern California. We went in to pull Robin, and found out he had a mate with him. A sweet, petite girl named Princess. While we are at our capacity with many medical needs dogs, we couldn’t separate these two sweethearts! They took their freedom ride together! They both barked, “hooray!”
Robin is about 11 years old, Princess is about 9. They were surrendered together. Robin is blind, and his owners dumped him because they didn’t want an old, blind dog anymore. We don’t know the story behind Princess being dumped, but looking at her, she has not been well taken care of. We were told they both lived their lives as outdoor dogs.
Robin is as sweet as can be! He loves people
and other dogs. He adores his mate Princess so much, when she walks away from him he cries! Robin has infected ears and was covered with flea dirt when we got him. He has been bathed and is much more comfortable. He is a little guy, around 17 pounds.
Sweet Freckley, suffered a tragic accident, and Second Chance Cocker Rescue came to her rescue!
She damaged a disk and can’t currently walk.
The vet believes she will walk again, with rehab and our usual brand of TLC. The SFSPCA is sending her home with a stroller, which she loves to go for walks in. The vet also removed a cancerous tumor on her nose and gave her a skin graft to cover the spot, so the other dogs wouldn’t make fun of her. What a trooper she is!
SFSPCA performed a CT on Freckley. Right now, the update, is that she is making improvements with walking and rest. The good news is, as of last week, Freckley was sitting up on her own! The neurologist says no PT for the time being, just rest.
This is great news and will certainly make it a lot easier to find a foster and eventually, Freckley’s forever family.
As with all of our precious babies, we will do anything possible, to get them healthy, happy and give them the best lives possible.
As always, any donations toward Freckley’s medical expenses are much appreciated!
We received an urgent plea for this temporarily sad, but sweet female, black and white Cocker at the
high kill SEAACA shelter in Downey, CA.
She was dumped there, by her owners at age 12, because they said she is “going blind.” She was a nasty mess, with a coat drier than straw and skin underneath, that felt like sandpaper. They must have been feeding her a very low grade food and then thrown the bag outside, for her to eat. She is overweight from the bad food. She was likely used as a breeder dog, her entire life. Her nipples are huge and mal-formed. This sweet baby has been neglected for a long, long time.
Given her appearance, she was being passed on by potential adopters, and most likely soon to be euthanized.
Second Chance Cocker Rescue jumped in, and she took her “freedom ride” a few days ago!
Look at this lovely girl now! We’ve named her Charlotte. After a little cleanup, she has nothing but smiles now.
She is very sweet, quiet, mellow and barely moves around. She is a large girl, and needless to say, she is now on a diet! She has a little snotty nose right now, so her spaying is still a couple of weeks off. She has stinky breath and will desperately need dental work after she is spayed.
We shaved her down and as you can see, she looks gorgeous! Sometimes, it doesn’t take much, to bring a beauty from rags to riches. Her bottom eyelids just droop a bit, so she has a little bit of the Elvis hound dog look to her, but she does not have cherry eyes.
Charlotte, and all of our fur babies are so grateful for a second chance. Please help us to keep rescuing, rehoming and rehabilitating.
We were contacted by a young woman who was desperately searching for a safe place for her beloved pet. She knew that sweet June would not last long in a shelter, because June has never known anything but the loving care of her family. They had one week to find a safe place, and they reached out to Second Chance Cocker Rescue for help.
Meet the newest guest in our Bed & Biscuit program! We welcomed sweet little June this week, and what a wonderful addition she is. June is 11 years young, and is very healthy for her age. She is having some ear issues and will need a complete physical in order to give her proper care.
June needs some help with her medical costs. Could you please find it in your heart to donate on behalf of Sweet June?
The Bed & Biscuit is a resort style residence that allows us to house up to ten additional senior Cockers at private kennel in Riverside County. There are comfy couches to nap on, dog beds all over the floor, a huge play area with trees to hangout in during the day. The inside walls of the building have been painted to look like a living room so the dog will feel as much at home as possible. These seniors are available for a Sanctuary home, but can stay here forever if they don’t get chosen by a family. The cost to house, feed and keep these dogs is $1250 a month. Medical care is extra and averages $800 per senior per year. We have a extra soft spot for senior Cocker Spaniels and would like to invite you to join us supporting this project!
Second Chance Cocker Rescue makes a promise to all the dogs we rescue. They will ALWAYS be taken care of.
Lucy was adopted out 5 years ago to a gentleman in Nevada. He passed away, and Lucy was returned to us at 10 yrs old because we always take our dogs back.
She has several medical problems we need to deal with. She has a torn ACL that we are treating with acupuncture and a brace, her liver enzymes are high and she has bladder stones. We are making sure she has good care, but need
help paying for her vet bills. Any help you can give is so appreciated!
Lucy is being fostered, and her foster dad Gil has decided she will stay with him as a Sanctuary girl. He sent us these photos. Look how happy she is!
Second Chance Cocker Rescue wants to thank Gil and all our other foster families, forever families and donors. It takes a village!
I have said yes over and over again this summer. Now we have to pay the piper. We have 22 Dogs in boarding waiting for foster homes or adopters. We need your help! The money we are paying for boarding should be going to rescue more dogs. If you could take just one foster that will help us get our numbers down. Ask your friends, your family, your husband…do you have room for just one more?
Oscar and Crystal, Skippy, Sandy, Willie, Asher, Skipper, Ivy, Daisy, Amos, Coco, Mason, Fiona, Marley, Otis, Dottie, Scooter, Chester, Copper, Robbie, Tommy Boy and Helen.
