Spring Fundraiser!

Our spring raffle was so successful last year that we are going to do it again this year. Tickets are $2 a piece or 12 tickets for $20. The prizes are:

$500 first prize      $250 second prize      $100 third prize

 We will be holding two drawings again this year, one at the Sacramento Picnic on June 23 and one at the Santa Barbara Picnic on May 12. You do not have to be present to win.

Every donation made in in honor of Charlie, special favorite of Joann’s,  came from the Sacramento City shelter. He is 8 years old. He had horrible elephant-like skin underneath on his belly and hair loss in several areas.  He was surrendered because his owners could not take care of him, He suffered with these skin issues his whole life.  His hair has almost grown back everywhere except on his neck.  He has the biggest brown eyes and just stares at you for attention.  Donate in Honor of Charlie.

Every donation made in honor of BJ, a favorite of Elizabeth’s, will enter you in the Santa Barbara drawing. BJ is only 1 1/2 years old and already blind from cataracts. His surgery will cost about $3,000 but we think it is worth it. Help us give BJ his sight back! Donate in Honor of BJ.

Special Needs Puppies

All Three Puppies

Martha had three six week old puppies could not stand or lift their heads but they were eating well. Their other three siblings were normal, healthy puppies but these three were not thriving and it worried her. So when the vet said they would never be normal she was not sure what to do or where to go. One of the vet staff suggested calling us. We were intrigued and just happened to have a foster mom in Santa Barbara who specializes in special needs fosters.

Martha agreed to drive them all the way up to Ventura where we would meet her and the three little ones. We did not know what to expect but we found three beautiful babies. They had fat little tummies and healthy coats but they could not stand or even lift their heads normally. They rolled around and bobbed their heads to see around.

Our foster mom created a sling for the puppies to use when eating. (Video of a Puppy Eating In His Sling) It is strengthening their legs and necks and allows them to eat with out getting food all over everything and everybody. She also is giving them sessions on the grass outside where they can roll around to their hearts content and build up more muscle tone in their bodies. The largest boy, Keane is already trying to take steps on is own and the other two, Kenway and Kemply are getting stronger every day.

We had our foster mom contact a group she works with in the Bay Area who specialize in special needs rescues. They have a lot of experience with neurological disorders and are very anxious to see them. She has planned a trip up in a couple of weeks and we will see what they think of our little ones. It is our hope that they will be able to one day, walk and eat on their own. They will never be normal but they can live a normal life with a family who understands their special needs.

Boycotting The Westminster Dog Show? You Bet!

“After 24 years, the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show has changed sponsors from Pedigree to Purina because the club doesn’t like Pedigree’s very effective “Adopt a Shelter Dog” ad series.” this is the start of a well written ariticle about the decision of the Westminster Dog Show to drop Pedigree because of it’s support of dog rescue and shelter dogs.  Wow, we have to say we are not very impressed by this decision.

Westminster Kennel Club is sanctioned by the American Kennel Club and the AKC is very supportive of puppy mills. Every dog that is bred in a puppy mill is registered with the AKC and they get registration fee. They make big bucks from the puppy mills. They evidently don’t care that these are the same dogs dying every day in the shelters.

I don’t know about you but I will not be watching the Westminster Show this year and telling everyone I know why!  —Elizabeth

Emma’s Happy Tail

This is Emma, she was the little girl that was accidentally hit by a car by her owners in Salinas  and then they wanted her euthanized because they could not afford the vet bill..Instead, the vet contacted Second Chance Cocker Rescue and we took her in, got her patched up and found her a fabulous home. Cali Helps Save Cocker Spaniels In Need

Phoebe’s Last Chance

Phoebe is a little darling who was picked up as a stray at the Stanislaus County Animal Control in Modesto.   They said she appeared to have been attacked by several dogs and pleaded with us to take her as she was such a sweet little girl, wagging her tail even though she was in pain.   As it turns out, she has a horrific case of Demodex which is a noncontagious skin condition caused by mites.   Only dogs that have a suppressed immune system will get this.    Phoebe was terribly neglected to have this get as bad as it is.   Her medical bills so far have reached $450 and we expect that to increase. Thank you for your help. Without your support we could not have rescued this deserving soul.

12/21/11 update:
Phoebe had an area on her front leg that opened up like a cut.  It was very deep, so Joann took her to the vet on Friday night – they had to put stitches in her leg to sew it up.  She spent the night at the vet’s and came home on Saturday and is resting.  While she was under she was shaved more and the vet cleansed her wounds and her face so that her skin could breathe better.   She is a little fighter and truly does have the will to survive.  She has a better appetite and is eating better.  When Joann took her from the car Saturday morning, her cat was out there and she even did a little growl at him!    She is on 6 different medications which includes eye and ear meds. She is healing but still has a long way to go.

Clara’s Amazing Christmas Present

Clara was a stray at the Turlock shelter when we met her. She was sad and felt a bit hopeless behind bars but quickly picked up her spirits when we pulled her and popped her into a foster home. She needed Cherry eye surgery and to be spayed before she was ready to go home with anyone but she attended a couple of adoption events in Sacramento with us while waiting for her surgery date.

That was where she was spotted by Elizabeth and Bill from Folsom. They immediately felt a connection and although they were not ready to bring a dog home they wanted to help her. They spoke to Joann and found out that her surgery was going to cost over $500 and they pledged on the spot to pay the whole thing.

Clara had her surgery. She is in recovery and will soon be ready for a new home. Clara’s guardian angels, Elizabeth and Bill will be watching to see this little darling gets a good home.  We are deeply grateful to Elizabeth and Bill and humbled by their generosity.

Santa Claws Photo Events and The Holiday Street Fair, This December

Sacramento

We will be participating in two holiday theme photo events this season.  Petsmart is furnishing the equipment and Santa suit.  We are providing the labor force (yeah volunteers!).  The first event will be on December 10  th. at Petsmart, 1738 Watt Ave. in Sacramento (CANCELLED)  and the second will be on December 17 th.  at Petsmart, 2705 E. Bidwell in Folsom.  Both sessions will be held from 11 AM to 4 PM.  We hope a lot of our friends will bring their fur covered (or hairless would work too) companions for pictures with Santa.  Each picture will cost $9.95 and Petsmart will donate $5 of that fee to Second Chance.  So come on out, do a good thing, and have a photographic record of it.

December 10—We will be sponsoring along with The Pet House the Holiday Street Fair at The Pet House, 5781 Calle Real  Goleta 10-3pm. There will be baked goods, jewelry by Karen, adoptable dogs, nail trimming,  fun dog stuff, carolers, a wandering santa. Come on down and bring your dogs for some holiday fun.


Breast Cancer Survivor

   Like most adult female dogs who have not been spayed, Gigi had many mammary tumors. that needed to be removed. It took two surgeries for a total of $1600 to remove her entire mammary chain on either side before she was ready for adoption. Debi from Los Alamos took great care of her during her recovery. Then Gig met Daphne and fell in love. Her world is now complete with her new family in Arroyo Grande.
