Romeo was only 12 weeks old when his family called us and said they wanted to find him a new home because he was blind. He had juvenile cataracts and was having trouble adjusting. When we met Romeo he was afraid to come out of the crate and he flinched when anyone got too close. He had nightmares when he was sleeping where he cried and whimpered.
The first thing we did was make an appointment with our eye specialist in Arroyo Grande. We have to wait until the 25th to see her but in the mean time we started working on his self confidence and training him to deal with the world as a blind boy. He has learned to come when called, to navigate strange places and meet new people. He has learned to deal with stairs, door ways and walking on and off leash. He now loves to go for off leash beach walks, meeting new dogs and people. The nightmares have subsided and now he loves to tease the other foster dogs in the house.
We can’t wait to schedule his surgery so he can see again but until then he will be a well adjusted boy and will enjoy his puppy months instead of living in fear of the black world around him.
Bella Maria is an older woman who has fallen for a younger man. She and Roscoe lost their human family when they were taken to the shelter but they vowed not to be separated and managed to convince the shelter staff to beg us to take them both. They are adorable together. They sleep together, they check in with one another all the time and they share food bowls.
Bella Maria is about 8-10 yrs old and a purebred Cocker girl while Roscoe is only 3 yrs old and a Maltese /Shih tzu who looks just like a Muppet and snorts when he is excited. She is a sweet gentle soul and he is silly and full of himself. Roscoe has cataracts but she takes care of him and he watches out for her. When they came in we could tell no one took very good care of them for a long time. Bella’s nails were grown into the pads of her feet, several of her teeth were abscessed and their fur was matted and filthy. But as long as they were together they were happy.
We got them both cleaned up and gave Bella Marie a dental and pedicure. Now Bella Marie and Roscoe desperately need a foster home while they are waiting for their forever family to find them. Can you help?
Quiggly’s dad was elderly and when he passed away at home the paramedics did not know that Quiggly was in the back yard. They left without notifying anyone about him. Lucky for Quiggly the neighbor noticed him and started throwing food over the fence and dripping her hose over so he would have food and water until she could get him out of there.
Her friend Frank agreed to keep him until we could pick him up on Saturday. When we met Frank and Quiggly in Elk Grove after our annual picnic he was stressed and confused from everything that had happened to him. He quickly settled down in his foster home and immediately made friends with their other foster girl, Sarah Jane. He and Sarah Jane would play and play and play for hours.

Buddy and Bow had their mom pass away while she was on vacation. They were left with their sitter who couldn’t help them. Buddy is twelve years old and has Cushings disease. Bow is seven and they are inseparable. This is a hard pair to get adopted so the shelter called us for help. We took one look at them and agreed to take them. The staff at the shelter drove them all the way to Santa Barbara to make sure they got here safely.
They were upset and stressed when we meet them but they quickly settled in and they are delightful! Buddy is a sweet happy boy and Bow sticks to him like glue. We are looking for a home for Bow who will take Buddy as well as a sanctuary boy. They are sweet , cuddly and love to play. We are so glad we took these two sweethearts.
You can purchase your tickets online now or send us an email to RSVP and buy your tickets at the door.
The SCCR Santa Barbara Picnic is scheduled for Saturday, July 20th. You can reserve your spot for that picnic now too.
Time, place and directions for both picnics on the website.
We can’t wait to see you all there with your “cocker kids”!
Sometimes it takes longer than we like to find the perfect home for our ‘kids’ but we don’t give up! Sammy was in foster for two years before he found the perfect family for him. Sammy is a quirky little guy. He has some rules but he is a happy little man and we loved having him in foster with us.
We were so sad to say good bye but we are so happy for him. Now he gets to be the only boy in the house. The Morgan’s are experienced cockapoo people who will understand his quirks and wonderful personality. He is loving all the love and attention. He gave them a two paws up rating!
Part of having a no-kill policy is making sure all our dogs are kept in healthy, happy environments until they are adopted. We could not do that with out your support. Thank you all for helping make this happen for Sammy and all his friends.
Talia was hit by a car and taken to the shelter. We knew when we got the call that her vet bills could be high and we didn’t have much to spare but she was in so much pain when we got the call we could not say no.
Honey came in with so many fox tails she had to have surgery to remove them all. Poor baby looked like a pin cushion under all her mats and tangles. She turned out to be a real beauty under all that hair and dirt. She will be ready for adoption in a couple of days when we make sure she has healed up completely.
Lulu is completely blind at 2 years old from cataracts. We think she deserves to see for the rest of her life so we are going to make it happen. We are so grateful for your support that allows us to give Lulu this precious gift.
This year for every $25 donation towards Lulu’s cataract surgery we will enter you 15 times in our Spring Fundraiser drawing. We are giving away $500, $250 and $250 at each of our Annual Picnics. The first drawing will be at our Sacramento annual picnic on June 22 and the second will be at the Santa Barbara picnic on July 20th. Don’t forget to reserve your spot at the Picnic!
This is Ladie’s before picture. She had kennel cough, four inch nails and mats all over. But when we got her cleaned up and over the kennel cough she was pretty darn cute!
Here she is after her clean up, a few good meals and lots of TLC from her foster mom Debra. She is a whole new dog!
Ladie is a gentle sould about 6-8 years old. She just wants to be with someone who will love her. We think she deserves it, don’t you?
