Stanley: Our Little Hero
When we first met Stanley, he was skin and bones, and had been criminally neglected for
years. On intake, the shelter report said he was 19 lbs. When Carolyn got Stanley, he weighed in at 13 lbs. He was severely dehydrated, and he had chronic diarrhea.
CAROLYN’S INTAKE REPORT:
He is beyond thin. I have rarely seen a dog this thin, every bone in his little body is sticking out. He looks like he hasn’t eaten in over a month. He is eating great though now! His fur is sparse at best, and it doesn’t ‘appear’ to be a mange issue, but I would bet it is a nutrition issue. His nails were terribly overgrown (I snipped them this morning and they were very brittle…..again, appearing to be a nutrition issue) and he has absolutely no muscle tone at all. Poor boy. Amazingly, he is a resilient little guy, nub wagging, happy boy who does fine with other dogs and people!
DR CARD: MEDICAL EXAM:
Stanley’s medical notes from his exam: Stanley does have a heart murmur, but his blood was not bad and a T4 was done, and he is low, but Dr. Card feels that is because he has basically been starved almost to death. She would like to re-run that once he puts on some weight and obviously he can’t even be neutered until he is much stronger.
Today, Stanley is up to 16 lbs and making progress daily, and is on a special, high-calorie diet. Stanley is still a friendly, trusting little guy that seems to be so resilient that he does not fear humans at all. Amazing really! Stanley will be under Carolyn and Dr. Cards tender care for another month at least, and maybe more. After that, he will need a foster home, or even better, his own home. Stanley deserves to be cherished and adored for the rest of his life! He deserves to experience kindness and loving care for perhaps the very first time in his life! Sweet Coco gets help from SCCR and Police
talk directly to them. The dog was in Rosemead, CA and our transporter happened to be driving through. She agreed to stop by. Our directions were an address, and if they were not home then the dog would be in the side yard and we were to just take her. We have never taken a dog out of a yard in the history of SCCR. It felt odd, but better safe than sorry. The transporter found a neighbor who confirmed she was supposed to take the dog and go.
Bella Rose and Brando’s Tail Wagging Tale
Bella Rose and Brando both came in with quite an attitude. Meg, our transporter warned us that Brando tried to attack both her and her husband. Bella didn’t want to be touched and would snap at anyone who tried to pet her, and any dogs that came close got the same treatment. We started their socialization training as soon as they were cleared by the vet. We got them used to other dogs by sending them out every day to play in play groups with 4 to 5 dogs. Carolyn and her staff worked with them daily until the rough edges started to come off. Brando was the
quickest to turn into a love machine. When they were ready, we moved them to a foster home where their training continued. They got to sleep on the bed, cuddle on the couch and take walks learning to meet and greet new people. Basically they learned to be charming, sweet kids. They are now ready to be adopted and we couldn’t be prouder of them.
Brando is a black male, 4 years old, small, housetrained, good with other dogs, 4 yrs old. Bella Rose is white and reddish, 7 yrs old, 30 lbs, house trained and good with cats and dogs. Both are being fostered in Santa Barbara, CA. They are hoping they will have their forever homes soon!
Just think how close to being euthanized they were when we agreed to take them. Please support our work so we can keep rescuing the Cockers that need us. Thank you!
Powers is Getting the Gift of Sight

Chasing the tennis ball is his passion in life. He went blind in one eye, then the lens luxated in the other. He is going into surgery to save his sight today. It will cost us $2500, but he will be able to play ball again, take walks without bumping into things or falling off the curb and look gratefully into the eyes of his family when he is adopted. A huge thank you to Veterinary Vision in San Carlos. They take great care of our kids! Any donation, large or small to help pay for Powers’s eye surgery is much appreciated!
When he is healed up, Powers will be eligible for our Sanctuary Program, where we take care of his medical expenses. He is being fostered in Antioch, CA.
Lili – Our Cocker up North needs Help
Meet Lili! Lili is a 10 year old, sweet little chocolate Cocker Spaniel. Lili was left at the
Bend, Oregon humane society by her family, because they claimed that she was sick. The Humane Society didn’t find anything wrong with her, except that she needs a dental badly. She has a lot of rotten teeth. We agreed to take her after we found a foster for her in Eugene, OR. We could use some help paying for her dental bill which will be close to $1000. Jake had his vet visit last week. He is scheduled for a dental and a bilateral eye ablations because he has glaucoma. His nails were so bad they were growing into his pads. Saved from the Cold
In some of the worst weather conditions imaginable, a good samaritan came across two senior dogs left outside with snow on the ground. This same person delivered them to a shelter in a nearby town. Our newest volunteer, and adopted mom of Mimi, saw them appear in a Facebook posting and decided to leap into action to help! She talked her local shelter into allowing her to foster the bonded pair. She then got in touch with Second Chance Cocker Rescue, and asked us if we would be willing to pull them, and take them under our wing. We talked to the shelter and got permission to take them into SCCR. The Cocker Spaniel, whose name is Smokey, needs immediate eye surgery due to Glaucoma, and a possible injury to the other eye as well. The other dog, Clover was given assistance with her dental issues through the shelter. We want to thank Barbara at the local shelter for being so easy to work with and for offering to take care of little Clover’s dental. Lin will continue to foster and to assist with medical care. A huge thank you to Lin for her caring heart.
Lin’s report on both dogs: Smokey is so sweet! And very loving, even enduring excruciating pain, from his eye issue, and possible frostbite. He more than likely saved little Clover’s life, by sheltering her small body from the snowstorm. Smokey can hear very well even though he is nearly blind. His bonded buddy Clover is deaf, but is able to see. Clover is dear and gentle little female terrier who watches out for her friend Smokey. He does the same for her! 12 year old Smokey weighs about 36 lbs. Little Clover weighs about 16 lbs and is about 9 years of age.
We are asking for help with their medical care. Medical bills are likely to be ongoing and expensive. Both Smokey and Clover are now very well cared for, in a safe and warm home with Lin for now. It is such a blessing to see the outpouring of love and support for these two rescued pups! Thank you!
Bed & Biscuit – One Year Strong
The Bed & Biscuit is celebrating our One Year Anniversary. We are a comfy home for 10, Second Chance Cocker Rescue senior Cockers. The B&B has a comfy sofa and lots of soft dog beds all over the floor. It’s heated in the winter and cool fans run in the summer. There is a huge run that spans the entire width of the property with trees, toys and great napping spots. We are painting the inside with murals so it looks like a living room.

UPDATE: Holly is recovering from surgery and is doing fantastic. She is eating well, and is 
recovering quickly. Holly came to us through our Bakersfield city shelter, and we love them there!!! We picked her up the day before Christmas Eve. They always do everything possible for the Cockers they transfer to SCCR. Holly came to us with a ruptured mammary tumor, and she needed immediate surgery. I fostered her over the weekend, and I slept with her propped up so she was comfortable. Holly went in for surgery to remove her tumors one week ago today. Holly wound up having a massive tumor in her abdomen, which was affecting her breathing and her inability to get comfortable. Dr. was able to remove the primary tumor completely, and several smaller ones during the surgery. Holly will need to have another surgery later next month after she recovers a bit, in order to have her spayed, and a small hernia repair done. Dr was not able to complete everything due to the size of her primary tumor. The results of her biopsy were very promising. All of the margins around the tumor were clear, and her lymph nodes were clear as well. Her X-rays were also clear. It was a low grade tumor and her prognosis is good. We are celebrating this miracle! Holly is an amazing girl. She is about 20 lbs and is fully house-trained. She gets along with other dogs and loves everyone she meets. She has impeccable manners. I wish I could keep her, because she is definitely a keeper! She would make an amazing therapy dog! Holly will be ready for adoption in about a month, after her final surgery, to repair her hernia and do her spay procedure. We are asking for donations to cover Holly’s surgeries. I am so glad we answered the call to save Holly’s life. We could not do this without the continued support of all of you! Holly said thank you for helping her life❤❤❤!
