On May 8th, I spoke with the owner of Max, Oliver, (age 9: siblings) and Zoe (age 11; mom) for the very first time. Chris shared that he was losing his home and needed to move out by the 15th of May. He was distraught and was agonizing about finding the 3 pups a home together. Not many landlords will rent to someone with 3 dogs. I agreed to help him and we decided that we would try to rehome all 3 together, but we both recognized that it was a slim chance to re-home all 3 to the same Adopter. They were posted for adoption that day, and the search for a new home began.
On May 11th, Chris called and asked if they could come to my home that evening. I had been on the phone screening applicants for about 7 hours. I had just received an application from a woman in Washington that wanted to adopt all 3 together! Most of the
other applicants wanted the mom Zoe, or the two brothers. I shared that information with the owner and he offered to pay for transport all the way to the adopters home! He also purchased dog food and sent some money to pay for their rabies vaccine update that was due soon! I contacted a volunteer with our rescue, and Janice agreed to take the pups to the the new owner over the weekend!
On Mother’s Day, Zoe, Max, and Oliver arrived at their new home in a small town near Seattle. It was love at first sight! Our Mother’s Day Mission was complete!
There are times in our lives when people are forced to choose to put their pets welfare above their own! Chris made a difficult decision. He made the right decision. He sacrificed what he wanted to do, and instead chose what was best for his pup-kids.
Former owner, Chris: Debra, this whole thing turned out to be such a wonderful thing. I am confident that Max, Oliver and Zoe, will shower their new family with a massive amount of love. I am so happy for all. From the bottom of my heart, thank you and thank the family in Washington for such love.
Lewis Family (adopting family):
Tell him (Chris) we will take the best care of them, and that they have brought needed joy to this house that has had too much death and sadness in this past year.
This is an example of the stories we hear every day. People wanting the best for their
pets, and at times being forced to make a hard choice. All 3 dogs are together, and have a loving home. They will be loved and cared for the rest of their lives! We could not do what we do without the love and support of our volunteers, our donors, and our foster homes!
We got a call from a rescuer last month that a C
ocker was wandering in the middle of a highway, and needed our help. Emy was limping, and had abrasions on her chest, as if she had been thrown out of a moving car! She was also covered in ticks, and literally hundreds were removed by hand from her whole body. Emy is a sweet little lady, and she deserves to be treated with loving care for the rest of her days! This little 6 year old is a sweetheart! She weighs 23 lbs, is kid and dog friendly, and is completely House-trained! Emy uses the dog door on her own without prompting. She is UTD on shots, and is spayed. She also has a microchip. This little lady will not last long! Get your applications in fast! Call Janice at (805) 441-4209 for more information! She is currently being fostered in Paso Robles!
Emy and some of her friends are searching for a foster family, or better yet, a permanent family! We rely on our foster families to give dogs like Emy sanctuary from difficult situations. Please consider opening your homes to Cockers just like Emy! Please call Elizabeth Mazzetti at (805) 687-4674 , for more information on our wonderful foster program!

Wait until you see the treasures we found in Bakersfield, CA! Oh my, their Chi!! Chihuahua’s that is. mixed with Chinese Crested (check out Robin) and mystery mixes they are all wonderful. If you are the person who thinks of a yappy, nippy Chi then we challenge you to find one bad apple in our bunch. They are silly, funny, sweet, loving, cuddly and just about perfect. Nope, sorry they are perfect!
In the last month, we had had to deal with 3 different cases involving several
hundred dogs. Our shelters are filled to the max, and Second Chance Cocker Rescue has decided that while rescuing Cocker Spaniels in need is our mission, at the same time we need to answer the call to save these sweet puppies, and other dogs, and allow them to make room for challenges that I cannot even begin to describe. As I walked through the facility today, I felt my heart breaking at the look of sheer terror on their beautiful faces. The amazing staff is working with rescues to save as many as possible. Many lack socialization, and a few mommy’s have litters. I know it seems like a daunting task. We can only do this with your help! First, we will need foster families to step up and open your homes. I know many of you are waiting for a Cocker Spaniel of your very own, but I am hoping that perhaps you would agree to foster while we are looking for your forever Cocker Spaniel love! Second, we will need help financially to move them out of the shelter and into foster homes. Third, we will need people to transport to the foster homes. I know that we are all able to lend a hand in some way. We all are gifted in different ways, and together we can do anything! Please consider joining with us to rescue as many as possible! Today, I wanted to send out the call for help! I also realized that we can be that help! Please contact Elizabeth directly at (805) 687-4674 to join with us! Time is running out! Thank you!
Hi future family, my name is Clarence. If you are looking for a loving lap dog, real cuddler and pal you have found him. I love to play ball, go for walks and take rides in the car. I get along with most dogs and with children. I am a Flat Coated Retriever/Cocker mix with a full tail that is always wagging. I am being fostered in Sonora, CA.
WE DESPERATELY NEED MORE FOSTER HOMES! We are asking for people to consider opening their homes to a Cocker Spaniel in need! We can’t save lives without foster homes and donations. We still have a lot of dogs waiting for foster homes! As a foster pup-parent you get first choice to adopt! We take care of the medical, and you provide a comfy home, healthy food, and lots of love! Please contact us directly to speak with us about any questions you may have about the foster program. We look forward to speaking with you and saving more Cocker boys and girls!!

Meet LUKAS! This little gentleman came into our rescue as a rehome. Lukas is 3 years of age, weighs 24 lbs, is house-trained, and also dog-door trained. He knows many commands, and is very obedient. He is being treated for arthritis in his hip. He needs anti-inflammatory medication, and some acupuncture to help with discomfort. Lukas gets along well with other dogs, and is ok with cats. He would do best in an adult only home, or with older kids in a calm home. Lukas is good in a car,
going for walks, and is truly an angel boy! He loves playing and running outdoors. He loves his toys, and loves to put them all in his bed with him. He has been to obedience school, and is trained to stay off the furniture. Can you find it in your heart to help Lukas with his medical treatment? He should be ready to meet his new family very soon! Get your applications in fast! Before I decide to keep him for myself! Love this boy! Fostered in Bakersfield, CA.
Adoption application:
MEET CASPER!! This beautiful boy was owner surrendered because there was a change in the elderly owner’s apartment policy!
He is a 13 year old Cocker Spaniel, and he desperately needs our help! He is a perfect dog with such a sweet nature. He is about 22 lbs which is on the small side. According to his owner, Casper has been an indoor dog since he was a puppy, and is completely housebroken. He likes other dogs. He is good on a leash, and likes riding in the car. He has intermediate dog training. He has medium energy. Right now, he is very confused and desperately searching for his owner! Poor Casper! He spent his time while in the shelter scanning his surroundings the whole time. I know in time he will get used to a new family. Medical notes say he has cataracts and needs teeth cleaning. He can see, according to the Vet, so not sure to what extent the cataracts are! Please consider helping poor Casper with his medical bills. He needs a foster or even better, a new home! We could not help dogs like Casper without your help! Thank you!
MEET JAKE! This little 6 month old baby Cocker boy is coming into our rescue! Jake
needs a lot of medical care! Jake needs double cherry-eye surgery, all of his shots, rabies vaccination, a microchip, as well as a neuter procedure! Poor baby! Head to toe work to be done! Ouch! This little sweetheart is coming into our rescue because his mom is moving away and they don’t allow dogs where she is moving. Jake is an angel, and he needs our help! Please consider helping this baby start his new life, by helping with his medical care. It is deeply appreciated! Once Jake has recovered he will be looking for a new home. Could it be with you? Application link here.
URGENT: We were contacted by a family asking for help this week! A family found a
female Cocker Spaniel, and no one was claiming her. This petite little 3 year old Cocker baby, had lost the use of her back legs. She was dragging them behind her, when attempting to walk. This kind family made her a cart out of PVC pipe, and she was able to get around better. Nothing obvious showed up in her medical exam. We have had good luck with this kind of disability, and many of you may remember Yodi’s story! We have committed to taking her! She will need a major medical exam with a specialist, and hydro-therapy to help her to regain function in her back legs. She will need acupuncture as well. Surgery is also an option at this point, since the cause of her paralysis remains to be determined. We are counting on all of you to help this little angel walk again and lead a normal life! We can do this! She is simply too young to do anything else! Thank you!

My name is Bocelli. Look at me! I am an adorable little man! I have a beautiful black and white coat, and I am full of spunk, and I love everyone. My new vet said that I have Cushings, and he gave me medication for that. He said, “Bocelli has had entropyion his entire life and it has severely damaged his eyes”. Entropyion is where my eye lashes curl under and rub against my eyes. He thinks I have been this way since birth. He told my foster mom that I have been in pain my whole life from it. The vet said that he will need to remove both of my eyes to stop the constant pain. I will also need a major dental cleaning and they may take some teeth out as well! Gee whiz! I hope they don’t take any more of my parts!
Bocelli has been with a foster mom this past month. This is what she had to say about him.
From his SCCR foster mom: Bocelli is a little dickens and they say I am a saint! Lol! He loves to chew up my designer shoes, hand bags and jackets….(could it be the Italian name?) Also loves paper, tissue, and cardboard! Even though he can’t see, he is able to leap like Superman onto the counter and make his own snack!
For all the neglect and pain he has suffered, Bocelli has so much love and energy to give,
and is now ready for a much better life! He is six years young, pretty much housebroken and good with everyone he meets!
Bocelli is in need of a forever home and medical attention. Can you please help us to give this boy a better, pain-free life? Bocelli hopes so! Thank you!
