I wonder, wonder who wrote the book of love? It might have been our new boy that shelter staff named Wonder. This sweet approximately 10 year old black male was turned into the shelter as a stray. He is blind so we always wonder how they survive on their own. His coat was so matted, you can see the dreadlocks in his picture. The level of neglect is off the charts. The shelter personnel had some concerns that he is diabetic too. We got him yesterday and he had a little bit of the sniffles, but this morning full blown kennel cough. Green snot, can’t breath well, etc. We rushed him to our vet and he is in isolation/intensive care. For those who don’t know, diabetes is pretty serious in a dog since they can’t tell you what is going on like a person can. One of the kickers with diabetes, they have to eat to have their insulin. Wonder only ate about half his dinner last night and wouldn’t touch a bite of food this morning, but we don’t even know if he is diabetic yet! He is so congested. We have concerns that he could roll into DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis) which is life threatening. He is currently on IV antibiotics and we are addressing his glucose levels. It’s a double whammy for this boy right now. We haven’t even had a chance to get all the nasty dreadlocks off and groom him. Having to put him in intensive care is expensive, so we really need some help with this boy. He is worth every penny, he is very sweet and right now fighting for his life. If you can help, we and Wonder would sure appreciate it.
If you would like to contribute to Wonder’s care we sure would appreciate it; please use the following link: DONATIONS or Text SCCR-MEDICAL-COSTS to 707070 to donate Thank you in advance.
PUPDATE: WONDER!
We have good news to share about Wonder. He is not diabetic after all! We are so happy about this, as he can live a nice normal life. He is recovering from his nasty case of kennel cough and we have shaved all those dreadlocks off him and revealed a beautiful, glossy coat. He will be having surgery (neuter) and a dental in about 10 days, and will be ready for adoption then. This sweet, loving boy is blind but gets around no problem. He does great with other dogs, loves all people he has met and while we don’t know about cats yet, we also assume that a cat could easily escape a blind dog! He enjoys toddling around his yard, is a very quiet boy who we haven’t even heard bark yet! He is housebroken to a doggie door and will make someone a loving companion. He is a bit thin, but eating great so have no reason to think he won’t put the weight back on. Due to the state of neglect he was in when we got him, we can assume he wasn’t getting enough to eat. Those days are behind him and he is looking for his new human, could it be you?
